A New Trip - Another Visit to the "Jungle Slide" [Esp-Eng]

On our trip to the Amazon this year, we also visited the Tobogán de la Selva, a place well-known in Venezuela. This was the first time our friends who were with us had visited the site, and the truth is that this place—like all the rivers and pools in the Amazon—changes a lot depending on the season. However, there’s something specific that happens on this river that can throw your plans off a bit.

First of all, in previous posts where I’ve told you about this beautiful place, I mentioned that to get there you have to climb a huge ramp. This requires a lot of physical effort because it’s hot, humid, and the path is steep. That’s why, when you finally reach the entrance, you feel really tired and just want to jump into the water right away.

​In this case, my friends aren’t used to traveling to places with such a humid climate that quickly wears you out, so it really took a toll on them. I feel that, at least upon arrival, they weren’t able to truly enjoy seeing this beautiful spot for the first time. As for me, although it’s not something I do often (more like once a year), I have some experience and arrived excited because it’s always great to come back.

En nuestro viaje a Amazonas de este año también visitamos el tan conocido, en Venezuela, Tobogán de la Selva. Esta era la primera vez que los amigos que nos acompañaron visitaban el sitio y, la verdad, es que este lugar, al igual que todos los ríos y pozos del Amazonas, cambia mucho según la temporada del año. Sin embargo, hay algo particular que ocurre en este río que puede frustrar un poco los planes.

​Primero que nada, en anteriores publicaciones en las que les he contado sobre este lindo lugar, les comenté que para llegar allí hay que subir una rampa enorme. Esto requiere mucho esfuerzo físico porque hace calor, hay humedad y el camino es empinado. Por eso, cuando uno finalmente llega a la entrada, se siente realmente cansado y deseando meterse al agua de una vez.

​En este caso, mis amigos no están acostumbrados a viajar a lugares con un clima tan húmedo que te agota rápidamente, así que les afectó bastante. Siento que, al menos al llegar, no lograron disfrutar como tal el ver por primera vez este lindo sitio. Por mi parte, aunque tampoco es una actividad que haga seguido (sino prácticamente una vez al año), tengo algo de experiencia y llegué emocionada porque siempre es genial volver.

Since I knew we were in the middle of a hot summer, I realized that the river would be a little lower and that the current flowing down the slab—which is why it’s called a slide—wouldn’t be as strong as at other times of the year. This is what I was telling you might throw a slight wrench into our plans. Although it’s not the only attraction, one of the biggest thrills is launching yourself down that slab and letting the power of the water push you downward as you slide down the enormous rock.

But the thing is, the water’s force is much weaker during the hottest months, which makes it harder for the water to carry you along. That’s exactly what happened this time: we couldn’t slide down the way we wanted to because, although there was a waterfall, it wasn’t as strong as on other occasions. Still, one positive aspect of the low water level is that—at least for me—I can swim much more peacefully because I know the water won’t go over my head at any point.

The outing was fun. There were several of us, including the four of us and a few friends who live in Amazonas. We stayed there for quite a while until it got late. Usually, when we plan to go to the slide, we prepare our food before leaving, pack it in lunch boxes, and just take it out at lunchtime. I like that because it doesn’t create as much waste when you bring your own containers.

​Como sabía que estábamos en un fuerte verano, comprendía que el río iba a estar a una altura un poco más baja y que la corriente que baja por la laja —por la cual se le dio el nombre de tobogán— no estaría tan fuerte como en otras épocas del año. Esto es lo que les comentaba que podía frustrar un poquito los planes. Aunque no es la única, una de las mayores atracciones es lanzarse por esa laja y dejar que la potencia del agua te empuje hacia abajo mientras te deslizas por la enorme roca.

​Pero ocurre que la potencia del agua es muchísimo menor en los meses en los que el calor es más intenso, y esto hace que sea más difícil que el agua te empuje. En esta ocasión eso fue lo que pasó: no pudimos resbalarnos como queríamos porque, aunque sí había caída de agua, no era tan fuerte como en otras ocasiones. Aun así, algo positivo de que el nivel esté bajo es que, por lo menos yo, me baño con mucha mayor tranquilidad porque sé que en ningún punto el agua va a sobrepasarme.

​El plan estuvo divertido. Fuimos varios, incluyéndonos a nosotros cuatro y a varios amigos que viven en Amazonas. Ahí estuvimos un buen rato hasta que se hizo tarde. Por lo general, cuando planeamos ir al tobogán, preparamos la comida antes de salir, la llevamos en viandas y simplemente la sacamos a la hora del almuerzo. Eso me agrada porque no se ensucia tanto cuando llevas tus propios envases.

The Jungle Slide is always a great place to visit, no matter what time of year it is. There are simply some things to do in the winter and different ones in the summer. Something really crazy that always happens for some reason is that, at some point during the day—no matter the season, whether it’s hot or cold—it always rains. This time was no exception; just as we were about to get out of the water to head home, it started raining hard.

For me, it was a wonderful experience, as always, and I sincerely hope my friends felt the same way. Because even though it’s a totally different kind of outing than what many people are used to (like going to the beach or the mountains), in places like this you feel that everything is so natural and you’re so disconnected from it all that you can’t help but notice how beautiful your surroundings are. I feel like that’s what makes it so much more special to me.

​El Tobogán de la Selva siempre es un buen sitio para visitar, no importa la época del año. Simplemente hay cosas que hacer cuando es invierno y otras diferentes cuando es verano. Algo muy loco que siempre ocurre por alguna razón es que, a alguna hora del día, sin importar la época, el calor o el frío, siempre llueve. Esta vez no fue la excepción, pues cuando ya estábamos por salirnos del agua para devolvernos a la casa, comenzó a llover fuerte.

​Para mí fue una bonita experiencia, como siempre, y espero de corazón que mis amigos lo hayan sentido igual. Porque aunque es un plan totalmente diferente al que muchos acostumbran (como ir a la playa o a la montaña), en lugares así sientes que todo es tan natural y estás tan desconectado que no puedes evitar notar lo hermoso que es tu alrededor. Siento que eso es lo que lo hace mucho más especial para mí.
