The need to explore led me to it. Skeptical, I walked along Calzada de 10 de Octubre toward my encounter with it. I had no idea what awaited me there, because it was a completely unfamiliar place. I had never seen photographs of it, nor did I know its history. I had only come across a few isolated interviews on the Internet, the opinion of an artificial intelligence, and the judgment of a good friend who, when I asked her where I should begin to discover this part of the city, answered without hesitation: "Jesús del Monte."
From the avenue, I could see the summit of the church that crowns the neighborhood, but from that vantage point, the magic had yet to reveal itself. It seemed like a ruined and desolate district, devoid of life. Perhaps that impression made me hesitate a thousand times before embarking on the adventure. Perhaps my ignorance of the place's true essence led me to reconsider it again and again.
That was when I decided to dig deeper and not remain on the surface, focusing only on what was obvious. I began reading articles, searching for more substantial references, and soon discovered that I had been utterly ignorant of the very land I inhabited.

Tantas señales no podían estar equivocadas.
Its importance as a neighborhood was astonishing. With such a deep history and a beauty that inspired more than one of Cuba’s great artists in their work, it played a pioneering role in the city’s expansion. It was here that the first church built outside Havana’s original city walls was established. Growth came swiftly. People settled around it, and art and culture soon flourished like wildflowers that beautify meadows and forests without any human care, nurtured only by nature itself.
So many signs could not be wrong. I could not go against the recommendations of those who knew the place, nor against the sum of collective knowledge. And so, one afternoon, despite the gloomy weather, the overcast sky, and the threat of rain, we set out on our adventure.
I must admit that I was somewhat nervous. Never before had I wandered through the city with a camera in hand, capturing the moments it offered me, photographing buildings that were slowly dissolving into time and yet, despite everything, retained a rare beauty. It was the beauty of places that no longer seem beautiful at first glance, but that, when you close your eyes, reappear illuminated by the radiance of years gone by.

It was an intense adventure. My heart was racing, yet there I was, in the midst of the crowd, taking photographs. After walking nearly two kilometers, my mind began to flow with the rhythm of the streets, capturing life around me, until at last we caught sight of the bell tower of the Parish of the Good Shepherd of Jesús del Monte. My amazement was overwhelming.
Gigantic murals adorned walls worn down by rain, mold, and the relentless passage of time. A tsunami of colors flooded streets lined with faded and deteriorating buildings. The contrast was absolute. Those vibrant hues made us forget everything else and focus entirely on the monumental works of art that the neighborhood, and the artists who had created them, were offering us as a gift.

It was a reality I had glimpsed ever since I moved to this neighborhood, hidden away in some forgotten corner: a children's playground on a side street, a mural on the wall of a school nestled in Santo Suárez, traces of artwork among the remains of a sports field. Fragments of urban art decorated this part of the city, but nothing like what I am showing you today.
After the amazement and the charming welcome the neighborhood had given us, there was only one thing left to do: explore the maze of narrow streets that rose and fell with the contours of the land. It did not take long to discover that, in any corner of Jesús del Monte, one could stumble upon something wonderful.

The search was richly rewarded. Not only were we able to admire the mural dedicated to Eliseo Diego, a Cuban intellectual who found inspiration in Jesús del Monte Avenue and devoted part of his work to it. After all, what today appears as decay and deterioration was once architectural and urban poetry. We also encountered the beautiful mural inspired by The Canticle of the Creatures, a reminder that religious syncretism is an intrinsic part of life in this area of the city, as well as the gigantic Eye whose pupil reflects the essence of Cuban art.
All of it was extraordinary. The discovery of a space gradually being flooded with art left a profound impression on my thoughts and strengthened my desire to explore this piece of land, this fragment of the city, this corner of Havana that I now call home. Amid its deterioration, it still preserves the charm of the past, refreshed and illuminated by the colors of the contemporary world.

¡Cuánta cultura incorporaré a mis saberes!
Jesús del Monte is a place one must return to. It is a joy to explore it again and again, leaving a record of the efforts made by so many to beautify their piece of the city. One must retrace the footsteps of Eliseo Diego and rescue the very things that inspired him so deeply. It is necessary to return to history in order to understand the value of the places that surround us, places we too often disregard through ignorance or lack of attention.
It is necessary to return to the streets and contemplate life as it unfolds along those neighborhood arteries, within those everyday spaces we inhabit, so often on automatic pilot. How much culture I will add to my understanding of the world! From this journey, which has only just begun, everything fills me with satisfaction. Everything gives me the energy to keep moving forward in the exploration and rediscovery of this city that today welcomes me as its own.
