Motovun, a Small Town In Croatian Istria [ENG/PL]

Our 2023 vacation in Croatian Istria ended in an incredibly charming town located in the northern part of the region. We left our accommodation in Rovinj very early in the morning to visit this place on the way back. We're talking about Motovun.

Motovun is a small town perched on a hilltop. The first thing that comes to mind when you see it from a distance is that it looks like something straight out of Tuscany. Surrounded by numerous vine-covered hills, it truly evokes this Italian region.

Nasze wakacje w chorwackiej Istrii w 2023 roku zakończyliśmy w pewnym miasteczku położonym w północnej części tego regionu. Opuściliśmy nasz nocleg w Rovinj bardzo wcześnie rano, żeby w drodze powrotnej zatrzymać się w Motovun

Motovun jest niewielką miejscowością zbudowaną na wzgórzu. Pierwsze co nasuwa się na myśl, kiedy widzimy to miejsce z oddali, to że wygląda jak żywcem wyjęte z Toskanii. Otoczone licznymi wzgórzami porośniętymi winoroślą naprawdę przypomina ten włoski region.

First, we stopped by the road to take a look at the town, seeing how it looks against the backdrop of the hills. There are several spots along the main road where you can park your car and admire Motovun from a distance. I highly recommend taking a moment to see the town from a distance.

Motovun once belonged to Italy and this is evident in its architecture and the general development of the town space.

Najpierw zatrzymaliśmy się przy drodze chcąc zerknąć na miasto. Na to, jak prezentuje się na tle i w otoczeniu tych wzgórz. Jest tu kilka miejsc obok głównej drogi, gdzie można zaparkować samochód i przyjrzeć się Motovun z odległości. Gorąco polecam poświęcić chwilę na zobaczenie miasta z oddali.

Motovun należało w przeszłości do Włoch i widać to w jego architekturze i ogólnym zagospodarowaniu przestrzeni miasteczka.

A very important thing about Motovun is that you can't drive into the main part of town. Unless you're a resident or have a permit, which is often granted to tourists staying within the walls.

There are paid parking lots on the road right in front of the entrance gate, where you can park. However, keep in mind that these fill up quickly during the tourist season. Then, you'll have to look for parking lots at the foot of the hill and hike to the top. We arrived early in the morning, so we parked our car without any problems.

Bardzo istotną rzeczą w Motovun jest fakt, że do głównej części miasta nie da się wjechać samochodem. Chyba że jest się mieszkańcem lub posiada się pozwolenie, które często otrzymują turyści mający zakwaterowanie wewnątrz murów.

Tuż przed bramą wjazdową znajdują się płatne parkingi przy drodze, gdzie można zaparkować. Należy jednak mieć na uwadze, że w sezonie turystycznym szybko się one zapełniają. Wtedy trzeba szukać parkingów pod wzgórzem i przejść pieszo na szczyt. My byliśmy na miejscu wcześnie rano, więc bez problemów zaparkowaliśmy nasz samochód.

Things get interesting right before you enter Motovun. It's worth stopping for a moment and taking in the surrounding hills from this vantage point. They made a huge impression on us, especially shrouded in a delicate mist illuminated by the beautiful morning light.

Już przed samym wejściem na teren Motovun robi się ciekawie. Warto zatrzymać się na moment i przyjrzeć okolicznym wzgórzom z tego miejsca. Na nas zrobiły ogromne wrażenie. Zwłaszcza otulone delikatną mgłą, oświetloną pięknym porannym światłem.

Tours of the town take place through narrow streets and often offer views of the surrounding countryside. It's worth exercising caution, as the roads are quite tight, and those authorized to enter the town may still find these roads difficult to navigate.

Zwiedzanie miasteczka odbywa się wąskimi uliczkami i często towarzyszą temu widoki na okoliczne tereny. Warto zachować ostrożność, gdyż jest tu dość ciasno, a osoby z upoważnieniem do wjazdu na teren miasta i tak mają utrudnione poruszanie się tymi drogami.

One of the town's main monuments is the Church of St. Stephen, which sits atop a hill in the square that forms the center of Motovun. Nearby stands a tall bell tower, which also serves as a vantage point and can be climbed to its summit. However, we skipped these attractions. A long journey back to Poland awaited us, and time was limited.

Jednym z głownych zabytków miasta jest Kościół św. Szczepana, który znajduje się na samym szczycie wzgórza, na placu, który stanowi centrum Motovun. W jego sąsiedztwie stoi wysoka dzwonnica, która jest również punktem widokowym i możliwe jest wejście na jej szczyt. My jednak sobie odpuściliśmy te atrakcje. Czekała nas długa podróż powrotna do Polski i czas był ograniczony.

We did, however, take advantage of another attraction: the city walls. They are in excellent condition and surround the central part of the hilltop. Technically, there's an entrance fee, but when we visited, they were open and unattended. Perhaps outside the tourist season, you can enter for free, in a more cultured and quiet way? Or maybe we were just lucky 😉

Skorzystaliśmy jednak z innej atrakcji, a mianowicie wejścia na mury miejskie. Są one zachowane w doskonałym stanie i otaczają centralną część szczytu wzgórza. Teoretycznie wejście na mury jest płatne, jednak kiedy my je zwiedzaliśmy, były otwarte i nikt ich nie pilnował. Być może poza sezonem turystycznym można tam kulturalnie i po cichu wejść za darmo? Albo mieliśmy po prostu szczęście 😉

A walk along the walls is very scenic. We can look out over the entire town and admire, among other things, the characteristic red roofs of Motovun's buildings. I highly recommend this walk.

The area around Motovun is famous for truffle collecting and trading. Numerous "deposits" of these very rare and hard-to-find mushrooms can be found here. Driving in this part of Istria, we encountered numerous roadside stands selling these mushrooms and related products. Therefore, it's worth being vigilant when driving.

An equally important economic element of the region is wine. A large quantity of various varieties of this beverage is produced here, so Motovun offers not only beautiful landscapes and architecture but also something for true connoisseurs.

Spacer wzdłuż murów jest bardzo widokowy. Możemy spoglądać na całe miasteczko i podziwiać między innymi charakterystyczne czerwone dachy zabudowy Motovun. Gorąco polecam taki spacer.

Okolice Motovun słyną ze zbierani i handlu truflami. Znajdują się tu liczne „pokłady” tych bardzo rzadkich i trudnych do odnalezienia grzybów. Jadąc drogą w tej części Istrii, spotkaliśmy liczne przydrożne punkty sprzedaży tych grzybów i wyrobów pochodnych. Warto więc zachować czujność podczas jazdy samochodem.

Równie ważnym elementem gospodarczym regionu jest wino. Produkuje się tu spore ilości różnych odmian tego trunku, a zatem Motovun to nie tylko piękne tereny i architektura, ale i coś dla prawdziwych smakoszy.
