Ferry to river Glomma, Isegran Fort and Hope cathedral

Hello, friends, travelers, and members of the community! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying beautiful moments with your loved ones. Today’s post is about Fredrikstad, a topic I started discussing a few weeks ago.

We were excited to explore the town, but we didn’t have enough time to see everything. After some consideration, we decided to take a longer scenic route along the river from Gamlebyen to Ålekilen, making several stops along the way. The ferry service is free for both locals and tourists, allowing for unlimited trips. The journey takes you along the end of the town before returning to the Gamlebyen stop via the same route. In total, the round trip takes about 70 to 80 minutes.

Fredrikstad port continuously invests in infrastructure improvements and technological advancements to enhance its efficiency and capacity. Future developments may include expansion projects, modernization of existing facilities, and the adoption of green technologies aimed at reducing the port's environmental footprint. The port is a key maritime facility in Norway, known for its efficient operations, strategic location, and significant contribution to the regional economy. With robust infrastructure and comprehensive services, it remains a vital hub for maritime trade and industry in the region.

Ferry's first stop is across the Gamlebyen, that pass the big dock with a shipyard. A traditional wooden sailing ship moored in a calm harbor, with several smaller boats and waterfront houses in the background. The clear blue sky and still water create a serene maritime scene.

Værstebrua bascule bridge drawbridge, with its raised arm, spans the waterway in the city's historic Gamlebyen district. Once a wooden structure, that replaced in 1906 with a modern steel bridge that still serves as a notable landmark.

At the end of the last stop, very few people were left on the ferry.
Most of the stops have small harbors or docks.
At the last stop, the boat has 10 minutes waiting before turning back to Gamlebyen.

When we were returning, instead of Gamlebyen, we took the second-to-last stop, which followed the Isegran fort. The historical structure Historic Isegran is beautifully situated in the river channel between Gamlebyen and Kråkerøy in Fredrikstad. Some residential areas are close to the waterfront.

As we entered the Isegran Fort area, the first thing that caught our attention was the shiny-roofed cathedral. We could see this creative and artistic structure from the open area or along the dock leading to the entrance. The cathedral was truly impressive, but to enter, we needed prior permission from the manager. It was even more beautiful inside, especially when the sunlight illuminated it, which was disappointing since we couldn't see its interior.

The Hope Cathedral symbolizes cooperation and serves as a gathering place for people of all ages, nationalities, and beliefs. Inspired by traditional Norwegian stave churches, it rises 14 meters high and is adorned in all the colors of the rainbow.
In 2020, a meaningful collaboration called BEFORM was established to raise awareness about the growing problem of plastic pollution in the ocean. This project was carried out in partnership with Hope Cathedral, which is now situated in the maritime environment at Isegran in Fredrikstad, as well as in several other locations in Norway. This initiative similar to the Clean Planet project.

Isegran fort is not a large or imposing structure. This stone wall is part of the rehabilitated cannon tower at Isegran fort in Fredrikstad, located on the opposite side of Gamlebyen, on the bank of the Glomma River. Standing on the wall, we can see Gamlebyen, the bridge, and the surrounding area. This charming site is an ideal spot for a stroll in nature, surrounded by lush green fields, a small beach, and an experience of wildlife.

Isegran holds a unique place in Norwegian history, often referred to as an oasis at the gateway to Norway's longest Glomma river. Today, Isegran is a vibrant harbor steeped in history, offering rich experiences and traditions. While famous sailing ships were once built here, the focus has now shifted to restoration and some new shipbuilding activities.
