Greetings, fellow travelers of the @worldmappin community! It’s a pleasure to be with you again, this time to show you an engineering marvel that’s truly out of the ordinary and unlike anything you’ve seen before: the “Flower of Venezuela” monument.

In the city of Barquisimeto, we have several iconic monuments that represent the city just by looking at them. One of them is the emblematic “Flor de Venezuela.”

This monument is located on Venezuela Avenue at the intersection with Bracamonte Avenue, right across from the Sambil shopping center, in what is known as the Eastern Triangle. It is a representation of a giant flower with 16 petals that can open and close depending on sunlight and weather conditions.

This combination of art and engineering is the brainchild of a brilliant Venezuelan architect, now deceased, named Fruto Vivas.

I met architect Vivas in person during my time as a college student, as he was invited on several occasions by the university’s engineering dean’s office to give talks and lectures on his significant works.

He was known for being a very down-to-earth and cheerful person, with ideas that surprised everyone because of their innovation and because he drew inspiration from nature to create his works.

I remember he showed us pictures of a treehouse he had built, and that inspired him to create a brilliant work called “A Tree to Live In” in Lecherías, which is now a reality.

Fruto’s idea for the flower began at the exhibition in Hannover, Germany, where this project was presented in the Venezuelan pavilion and was a huge success. It was then brought to Barquisimeto and installed at its current location.

The most striking feature of this creative work is the movement of the petals, guided by a central hydraulic stem that functions like a giant umbrella, opening and closing. This movement is inspired by an orchid, which is our national flower.

I imagine the architect must have studied the growth process of this natural flower very closely in order to integrate human life with nature and replicate it in a large-scale model, achieving this ingenious result.

Its three-level interior houses several fish tanks, gardens, and even an amphitheater. Large-scale photographs display landscapes from Venezuela and around the world. On the floor, the states of Venezuela and many other details are visible, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a space that both recreates and teaches them to love the beauties of our country even more.

It features beautiful gardens covered in violet flowers, which contrast with the green foliage, making it a spectacular sight to photograph and a wonderful memory to take home. Since its inauguration, this site has served as a recreational and cultural gathering place for the enjoyment of the city’s residents.

Projects like this remind us that it is indeed possible to use technology and engineering to celebrate our natural beauty. What began as a dream or an idea has now taken shape in concrete and metal in this beautiful structure, which is a true source of national pride.

Visitando el monumento La flor de Venezuela en Barquisimeto

Saludos amigos viajeros de la comunidad @worldmappin, es un placer estar nuevamente con ustedes, esta vez para mostrarles una obra de ingeniería que se sale de lo ordinario y de lo conocido: el monumento flor de Venezuela.

En la ciudad de Barquisimeto tenemos varios monumentos icónicos que representan la ciudad solo al verlos. Uno de ellos es la emblemática "Flor de Venezuela".

Este monumento está ubicado en la avenida Venezuela en el cruce con la avenida Bracamonte, justo al frente del centro comercial Sambil, en lo que conocemos como el Triángulo del este. Es una representación de una flor gigante de 16 pétalos que pueden abrirse y cerrarse de acuerdo a la luz solar y a las condiciones climaticas.

Esta combinación de arte e ingeniería es el resultado de la mente de un brillante arquitecto venezolano, ya fallecido, llamado Fruto Vivas.

Conocí personalmente al arquitecto Vivas en mi época de estudiante universitario, porque en varias oportunidades fue invitado por el decanato de ingeniería de la universidad, para ofrecer charlas y conferencias sobre sus importantes obras.

Se caracterizaba por ser una persona muy sencilla y jovial, con unas ideas que a todos sorprendían por lo novedoso y porque se inspiraba en la naturaleza para crear sus obras.

Recuerdo que nos mostró imágenes de una casa en un árbol que había construido, y eso le sirvió para inspirar una obra genial llamada "Un árbol para vivir" en Lecherías que hoy es una realidad.

La idea de la flor que tuvo Fruto comenzó en la exposición de Hannover, Alemania, donde este proyecto fue presentado en el pabellón venezolano y fue todo un éxito. Luego fue traído a Barquisimeto y se instaló en el sitio donde actualmente se encuentra.

Lo más llamativo de esta creativa obra, es el movimiento de los pétalos, guiados por un tallo central hidráulico que funciona como un gigantesco paraguas para abrir y cerrar. Es un movimiento inspirado por una orquídea, que es nuestra flor nacional.

Me imagino que el arquitecto tuvo que haber estudiado muy bien el proceso de crecimiento de esta flor natural, para integrar la vida humana con la naturaleza y poder imitarlo en un modelo a gran escala obteniendo el ingenioso resultado.

En su interior de tres niveles alberga varias peceras, jardines y hasta un anfiteatro. Fotografías de gran tamaño donde muestra paisajes venezolanos y del mundo. En el piso se aprecian los estados de Venezuela y muchos otros detalles que permite al visitante sumergirse en un espacio que recrea y a la vez enseña a amar más las bellezas de nuestro país.

Posee bellos jardines cubiertos de flores color violeta, que contrastan con el verdor del follaje, que la hacen un espectáculo para fotografiar y llevarse un buen recuerdo. Desde que fue inaugurada esta obra, ha sido un punto de encuentro recreativo y cultural para el disfrute de los habitantes de esta ciudad.

Este tipo de obras nos recuerdan que sí es posible utilizar la tecnología y la ingeniería para admirar nuestras bellezas naturales. Lo que comenzó como un sueño o una idea, hoy está materializado entre concreto y metal en esta bella representación que constituye un verdadero orgullo nacional.
