The Port and Waterfront of Turnu Măgurele | Let's travel together #366

Do you remember when I wrote about the place where the Olt River flows into the Danube, and you could see Bulgaria from the shore of Romania?

Today is going to be another similar experience, but from a different location than Islaz, namely, in Turnu Măgurele, which is just 10 km away from the first one mentioned.

Actually, these are just two of the big names from the Teleorman county, as in fact it represents the southern side of Romania and being able to spot the neighbouring country is not a foreign landscape for the locals.

The first place I and my bf decided to check out first, was the Danube Beach, which is located next to the harbour, from where people could cross the Danube and reach Nikopol, Bulgaria. However, this is possible only via ferry as the actual bridge making the connection between the two countries is via Giurgiu.

My bf was born in Turnu Magurele and spent a long part of his life on these lands, so he could even give some insides to share further, such as, initially it was supposed to be able to reach Bulgaria through this point as well, but those from Giurgiu considered it an unfair competition, so after some fights it was decided to limit the crossing through Turnu Magurele just via ferry.

I don't know much about Bulgaria, because even if it is one of Romania's neighbouring countries, I never really made it into their territory, but what I could see from the shore already made me realise that they have a better living when it comes to tourists, than what people from Turnu Magurele enjoy on this side of the Danube River.

We were quite in a rush when visiting this place as it was a long day and we were already looking forward to reach home, but we promised that one day we will return and make it on the ferry to explore Bulgaria as well, although I am a bit reluctant after hearing recently that Bulgarians don't really like Romanians and there are a lot of people behaving in a racist way if they hear people speaking Romanian in their country.

Personally, I don't know whether it's true or not, as I shared this info based on what I heard from other people after visiting Bulgaria, but I did have an experience with Bulgarian children who visited Romania for one week during high school, and we had all kinds of activities together where they were indeed very unfriendly and rude with us.

Anyways, as soon as we spent a couple of minutes on the beach, admiring the view and recharging ourselves with the vitamin D offered by the powerful sun, we continued walking along the shore until we reached what is known as the waterfront of Turnu Măgurele.

This is, actually, a fairly new construction that I can't really consider a real waterfront since it only has a few hundred meters in length, and most of it is being used as a parking lot for the cars coming by.

But even so, it was nice seeing a more dedicated place where someone could come and sit on a bench with a very chill and relaxing view that I absolutely loved. And I am not even such a big fan when it comes to waters, as I always preferred mountains more.

I am not sure whether the access down the floating platform is always allowed, but during my visit, the chain and padlock were missing. And since I already saw a couple of guys taking advantage of this place to go fishing, I thought I would give it a try as well, but not before attaching one more @worldmappin sticker on the panel where some other stickers were already part of.

That large panel where I attached the WMP sticker says that swimming is not allowed here, while the smaller panel says that access is not allowed unless you are an authorised person.

And speaking about not being allowed to swim, do note that the water level here is very deep, no matter when you visit it.

The whole platform is mounted on a floating system where both the bridges and the floating pub are moving in height depending on how high or how low the level of the Danube River goes.

On some of the black pillars, you can also see some numbers being written down, which are supposed to indicate the depth of the water at that time. I found it both interesting and scary, as water is, and will always remain my biggest fear.

There is currently just one pub linked to this floating platform, but it was closed during my visit at the beginning of June. However, I remember seeing something similar during my visit to the Czech Republic, with the mention that there were a lot more places like this one, but which seemed to have a lot of success, as most of the tourists and locals were searching for an empty table where to have a drink while dancing with the water waves and listening to some good music.

I am not sure, though, whether the place from my image is abandoned or simply not open since the proper season for summer activities has not started yet, but what I know for sure is that the view was fully worth the time spent around, no matter if you are accompanied by a drink or not.
