The Macuto boardwalk, in La Guaira state, Venezuela, is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the state who’s looking for beaches, safety, music, and affordable fun—and a place you can visit at any time of day: in other words, if you feel like going at 3 a.m. on a weekend, you’re guaranteed to have fun until dawn. On the other hand, if you arrive at 6 a.m., you’ll already find places open to serve you. It’s wonderful to have somewhere to go no matter what time it is.
Other #Hivers have surely covered this in detail here, but it turns out that lately it’s even become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Here are some of the highlights this spot has to offer.

El paseo de Macuto, en el estado La Guaira, en Venezuela, es un destino obligado para quienes visitan este estado, buscando playa, seguridad, música, diversión a bajo costo y donde se puede ir a cualquier hora del dÃa: entiéndase que si le provoca ir a las 3 de la madrugada un fin de semana, tendrá la diversión garantizada hasta el amanecer. Por el contrario, si llegas a las 6 de la mañana, ya encontrarás locales abiertos para tu atención. Es maravilloso tener dónde ir sin importar el horario.
Acá seguramente lo habrán detallado otros #hivers, pero resulta que últimamente se ha vuelto hasta una ruta de excursión para propios y visitantes. Acá te muestro algunas de las bondades que tiene este espacio.
First of all, it’s free. I’ve seen many countries where enjoying the beach has become a luxury because you have to pay for parking or even beach access. Not here; all you need is the desire and a bit of planning (sometimes it’s an impromptu outing), and from there, just head to the boardwalk and you’re there. There are boardwalks, plazas, and the beach where you can sit and enjoy the sea. There are also many establishments selling food and drinks to suit every taste. So there’s something for everyone, regardless of budget.
Second, accessibility. Whether by car or bus, it’s a central location that all locals know and can tell you where to find. One of the new developments is that there are now tours and routes departing from Caracas that go to the promenade, showing you the tourist sites, a beer tour, and, above all, lots of salsa dancing—which is a dance characteristic of us Caribbean people. So I highly recommend it 😊.

Lo primero es la gratuidad. He visto muchos paÃses donde disfrutar de la playa se ha vuelto un lujo porque tienen que pagar estacionamiento o incluso el acceso a la playa. Acá no; basta simplemente con tener la disposición y organización (a veces es un plan improvisado) y de allà dirigirte al paseo y ya estarás allÃ. Existen caminerÃas, plazas y la playa donde pueden sentarse a disfrutar del mar. También tiene muchos locales, donde venden comidas y bebidas según el gusto de cada quien. Asà que hay para todos los gustos de acuerdo al presupuesto.
Segundo, la accesibilidad. Ya sea en vehÃculo propio o en bus, es un espacio céntrico, que todos los habitantes conocen y te pueden indicar dónde queda. Una de las novedades es que actualmente desde Caracas salen tours y rutas que llegan al paseo, que te enseñan los sitios turÃsticos, una ruta cervecera y, sobre todo, mucho baile de salsa, que ese es un baile caracterÃstico de nosotros los caribeños. Asà que lo recomiendo 😊.
Pigeon Square
I’ve been told that it’s a very old and historic square that marks the start of the promenade. It turns out that this square had been neglected for many years, and I’m really happy that, like the tourist route I mentioned, it begins there. For this reason, they set up feeders and water stations so that the pigeons would start returning to those areas.

La plaza de las palomas
Me cuentan que es una plaza muy antigua e histórica que da la bienvenida al paseo. Resulta que esta plaza por muchos años estuvo abandonada y ahora me da mucha alegrÃa que, como la ruta turÃstica que les mencioné, comienza allÃ. Por esta causa, activaron los comederos y el agua para que las palomas comenzaran a llegar nuevamente a esos espacios.
We were told that they started this restoration project by bringing in some pigeons, but before long, the number of birds increased, and they began spending the night in the nests set up for that purpose. Obviously, we can’t sit in the square because the pigeons don’t control their droppings 😆, but it’s really nice to see their habitat, and the sound—though loud—is relaxing; I loved it and hope it stays that way.

Nos contaron que iniciaron esta recuperación con traer unas palomas, pero que en poco tiempo se multiplicó la visita de los pájaros y pernoctar en los nidos para tal fin. Obviamente, que no nos podemos sentar en la plaza porque las palomas no controlan sus heces 😆, pero es muy bonito apreciar su hábitat y el sonido, aunque fuerte, es relajante; me encantó y espero que siga asÃ.
Another attraction that has made a comeback is the bingo and domino games, which were once hugely popular along the promenade. These two activities I’m talking about are traditional Venezuelan games where older adults carry on the tradition, sitting down and enjoying a pleasant afternoon to the rhythm of the music and the sound of the ocean in the background. It’s quite a sight because you can see the camaraderie, but also the competitive spirit typical of men. I haven’t seen any girls playing, but I assume they at least accompany their partners during these moments of leisure and competition 😉.

Otro de los espacios que se recuperaron son los bingos y dominó que fueron multitudinarios alguna vez en el paseo. Estos dos eventos de los que les hablo se tratan de juegos tradicionales venezolanos en los que se sigue la tradición con personas de edad adulta, sentados, disfrutando de una tarde amena al ritmo de la música y el mar de fondo. Es un espectáculo porque se ve la amistad, pero también el carácter competitivo propio de los hombres. No he visto chicas jugando, pero asumo que al menos van a acompañar a sus parejas en esos momentos de esparcimiento y competencia 😉.
I like going there for the food and drinks. There are also historic and iconic spots that have stood the test of time. There’s a hot dog stand I love, and whenever we go there, it’s a must-stop because the hot dogs are huge and really tasty. I’ll leave the restaurant review to the right community 😉.
A mà me gusta ir allà por la comida y la bebida. Existen sitios también históricos y emblemáticos que se mantienen en el tiempo. Hay uno de venta de perros calientes que me encanta y siempre que vamos por allà es parada obligada porque son grandes y muy sabrosos. La reseña de su restaurante la dejo para la comunidad adecuada 😉.
And in case you need more convincing, here’s proof that this outing is fun for the whole family. We always go with a big group because we all have a great time thanks to the variety of activities it offers for everyone—without breaking the bank.

Y por si necesitan más argumentos, acá le dejo una evidencia de que el paseo sirve para toda la familia. Nosotros siempre vamos con mucha gente porque todos nos divertimos muchÃsimo por la variedad que nos ofrece para todos, sin mucho dinero.
But one day we visited during the week, and I LOVED IT! There weren't many people there—just a handful, in fact—and believe me, the tranquility and peace in the air were wonderful. Best of all, there's a police station and officers patrolling the area, so whether it's quiet or crowded, I definitely feel comfortable and safe spending my free time there.

Pero, un dÃa lo visitamos en la semana y ¡ME ENCANTÓ! No hay mucha gente, incluso solo unos pocos que se podÃan contar con los dedos, y créanme que la tranquilidad y paz que se respiraba era genial. Lo mejor de todo es que cuenta con casilla policial y policÃas que están patrullando el lugar, asà que, solitario o concurrido, definitivamente me siento cómoda y segura para pasar mi rato de esparcimiento.
And one more thing before I wrap up—this is actually one of the things I still want to do along the promenade. The promenade has hotels and inns that have been undergoing renovations, since it’s the only beach that stays open at night and where you can enjoy the sunrise from very early on, so I hope to stay at one of their hotels soon and be able to stroll around there at any time of day 😎.

Y otro dato antes de finalizar, que es una de las cosas que tengo pendiente por hacer en el paseo. El paseo cuenta con hoteles y posadas que se han ido recuperando, ya que es la única playa que abre de noche y desde muy temprano se puede disfrutar del amanecer, asà que espero pronto poderme quedar en su hotel y poder caminar a toda hora por allà 😎.
