Discovering Vigo: Cruising to Spain’s Northwest Coast

During my cruise aboard Liberty of the Seas, one of the ports we visited was Vigo, Spain. It was a nice change to wake up and see the port from the ship. After breakfast, we got ready and headed off the ship to explore the town.

Vigo is a port city in the north west of Spain and it was easy to walk around from where the ship docked. The weather was sunny, so it was nice just to take our time and have a look around. The first thing we noticed was how busy the harbour area was, with lots of boats and people going about their day.

We walked around the town and looked at the shops, streets and some of the local buildings. There were plenty of cafés and places to stop for a drink, but unfortunately as it was Sunday there weren’t many places open apart from the ones that recognised the opportunity and opened. If you had a lot of people getting off a cruise ship, wouldn't you open up?

We had a look at the main squares and enjoyed seeing the different styles of buildings.

There is an outdoor exhibition “MOMENTOS: 50 imágenes, 50 historias” in Vigo, Spain. It is a temporary photo exhibition by EL PAÍS celebrating the newspaper’s 50th anniversary. The display presents 50 large photographs and stories from the last five decades, highlighting major events, people, and moments covered by the newspaper. The only photograph that had been defaced showed the assassination attempt (allegedly) of Donald Trump. 😅

One of the things we liked about Vigo was that it felt like a real working Spanish city rather than just a tourist area. There were locals going about their normal routines, and it was interesting to see everyday life there. The chap selling football shirts was wearing the right one as Bellingham scored for England last night!

The ship looked impressive sitting in the harbour and it was a great view as we returned. Once back on board, we had time to relax and enjoy the facilities on the ship. After a day exploring, it was nice to sit down and watch the views as we sailed away from Vigo. Overall, Vigo was a pleasant stop on our cruise. It was not a huge city, but it was easy to explore and had a nice atmosphere. It gave us a chance to experience a part of Spain we had not visited before.
