Chasing Time in Triberg: A Motorhome Adventure in Germany

For our latest motorhome adventure, we decided to explore the charming villages of Germany's iconic Black Forest. It's a region synonymous with scenic drives, lush greenery, and, of course, the cuckoo clock.

The main goal of our trip was to see the Die größte Kuckucksuhr der Welt, which is the world's largest cuckoo clock! Located at the Eble Uhren-Park in Triberg, this isn't just a large clock on a wall, but an entire building constructed in the shape of a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock. After parking up the motorhome, you simply couldn't fail to miss what time it was! Every part of the movement is fully functional.

Though, just in case anyone had their eyes shut, there was a handy official sign confirming we had indeed reached "the world's biggest cuckoo clock!"

​Our day in Triberg was about more than just one giant clock, though. We spent a few hours wandering through the town, which is famous for its waterfalls and detailed woodcarvings.

​While strolling along, we also stumbled across tall wooden statues carved to resemble an Easter Island Moai head and wearing a classic Black Forest Bollenhut hat, which is the traditional headdress of the Black Forest region. Apparently, the local woodcarvers and artists enjoy joining traditional local folk art with quirky worldwide icons.

​Of course, no trip is complete without browsing the local shops. The town is renowned for its woodwork, particularly its nutcrackers, or Nussknacker, as the locals call them (which gives us UK folks a bit of a laugh as it means something completely different to us!)

The "House of 1000 Clocks" was packed to the rafters with a variety of traditional timepieces.

​Just as we were packing up to head off, we were distracted by a bright red DRF rescue helicopter banking low over the rooftops and pine trees before landing in a nearby field, a dramatic finale to a great stop.
