[EN/PT] Casa 90 Gallery - Morro de São Paulo
On one of the nights we spent in Morro de São Paulo, we had the opportunity to visit an exhibition with various works of art, bringing together works by various artists. The exhibition, entitled “Architectures of the Invisible”, takes place at Casa 90, a space where the works are available for both appreciation and sale. This is the only art gallery in Morro de São Paulo, according to the girl who welcomed us.
Em uma das noites que passamos em Morro de São Paulo, tivemos a oportunidade de visitar uma exposição com diversas obras de arte, reunindo trabalhos de vários artistas. A exposição, intitulada “Arquiteturas do Invisível”, acontece na Casa 90, espaço onde as obras estão disponíveis tanto para apreciação quanto para venda. Essa é a única galeria de arte existente em Morro de São Paulo, segundo a moça que nos recebeu.
The gallery is located right when you arrive in Morro de São Paulo, next to the famous Pousada Casarão. The space is intended for art exhibitions in different languages: paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations. Including both emerging artists and artists from the national and international scene, in total, there are more than 30 artists.
A galeria fica logo na chegada de Morro de São Paulo, ao lado da famosa Pousada Casarão. O espaço é destinado a exposições de arte em diferentes linguagens: pinturas, esculturas, fotografias e instalações. Contemplando tanto artistas emergentes quanto do cenário nacional e internacional, ao todo, são mais de 30 artistas.
The works are organized in different environments, generally grouped by style or artist. It really is a lot in one place, and they all attract a lot of attention, pleasing the most varied tastes. The most interesting thing about this type of space is precisely that it allows people to discover the works of these artists, even if they have no intention of purchasing any work.
As obras estão organizadas em diferentes ambientes, geralmente agrupadas por estilo ou por artista. É realmente muita coisa em um só lugar, e todas chamam bastante atenção, agradando aos mais variados gostos. O mais interessante desse tipo de espaço é justamente permitir que as pessoas conheçam as obras desses artistas, mesmo que não tenham a intenção de adquirir alguma obra.
My wife and I came across paintings valued at around R$5,000 (approximately US$1,000), high prices for something that, at first glance, may seem simple. But there it becomes clear that the price is linked to the recognition and appreciation of the artist. At first, we entered the space quite comfortably, just observing. However, after a while, a girl approached us to assist us, clearly with the intention of selling, and this ended up making me a little uncomfortable, mainly due to the high prices of the works.
Eu e minha esposa nos deparamos com quadros avaliados em cerca de R$ 5.000 (aproximadamente US$ 1.000), valores altos para algo que, à primeira vista, pode parecer simples. Mas ali fica evidente que o preço está ligado ao reconhecimento e à valorização do artista. No início, entramos no espaço bem à vontade, apenas observando. Porém, após algum tempo, uma moça se aproximou para nos atender, claramente com a intenção de vender, e isso acabou me deixando um pouco desconfortável, principalmente por conta dos valores elevados das obras.
Still, we took the opportunity to take some photos of wooden sculptures and paintings on canvas. Some works conveyed a darker air, especially those related to African-based religions, with elements that resembled ritual instruments, which, I confess, I didn't even photograph.
Ainda assim, aproveitamos para tirar algumas fotos de esculturas em madeira e de pinturas em tela. Algumas obras transmitiam um ar mais sombrio, especialmente aquelas relacionadas a religiões de matriz africana, com elementos que lembravam instrumentos de rituais, essas, confesso, nem cheguei a fotografar.
Overall, it was a very interesting experience and different from what you normally find in a tourist destination like Morro de São Paulo. I hope you liked the post!
