Golubac Fortress on the Danube - Serbia

Hi travel lovers. Today I will guide you to another historical landmark in my country, Serbia. This is a medieval fortified town known as the Golubac Fortress located along the banks of the Danube River.I call it the Fortress on the Water.Now, who built the fortress, that is, the city, is little known. It is said that the Serbs built it, and the part that protruded into the Danube was built by the Turks.There is a legend that an Ottoman commander fell in love with a girl from Serbia named Golubana. She did not want him, so he took her to the rocks and chained her there. That is how it got its name, Goluba Fortress.They built a highway through the fortress 100 years ago and pretty much destroyed it. But they later reconstructed it and created a tourist sensation. That's exactly why I'm here for the first time, even though it's close to me.I really don't like to write you historical details. There's a lot of writing and a lot of that on the net. So I'll take you through the fortress, trying to describe what I noticed and what I liked. And I really liked that you know.




At the entrance I bought a ticket for the green zone. The fortress has 9 towers and climbing the highest tower, the Citadel, is only for the bravest. So I chose the green zone, the safest place. Am I a coward? The tenth tower was built by the Turks. It is round in shape and was used for cannons.That's how they defended themselves against the attack that always came from the river. That is why the fortress is on the widest part of the Danube.There are two entrances to the fortress. The interior is divided into the Front, Back and Upper Castles. The metal stairs are very narrow and one must be careful.















, A palace was built in one of the towers where we saw an exhibition of archaeological findings, warrior equipment and armaments of the Golubac fortress.If anyone wants to know more, there are also presentations. For me, it was very interesting. I learned who ruled this fortress over the centuries, about many events and battles. The staff who worked there wore costumes from the 14th century.






On the way out of the fortress, we stopped at a self-service cafeteria. You get your own drinks, which you get in cardboard cups, and go to the terrace and enjoy the beautiful view.
