The White City: Ostuni (Italy)

Have you ever heard of the White City? We are talking about Ostuni, a small Mediterranean gem located in the Puglia region of southern Italy.
I was fortunate enough to visit this town in 2025, and its dazzling beauty has left a lasting impression on me.

Ho avuto la fortuna di visitare questo borgo nel 2025 e mi è rimasto nel cuore per la sua accecante bellezza.

Why is it called the White City? The name comes from the limewashing of the houses in its historic center, a tradition born in the Middle Ages to reflect sunlight and keep buildings cool.
In fact, you should know that in this Italian region, summer temperatures reach incredibly high!
Furthermore, whitewashing was also a hygienic measure to combat epidemics.
Perché si chiama Città Bianca? Il nome è dovuto alla colorazione fatta a calce delle abitazioni del suo centro storico, una tradizione nata nel Medioevo con l’obiettivo di riflettere la luce solare e mantenere gli edifici freschi.
Infatti, dovete sapere che in questa regione italiana in estate si raggiungono temperature veramente elevate!
Inoltre, la calce bianca era anche una misura igienica per contrastare le epidemie.

To reach Ostuni, leave your car before the historic center and proceed on foot, entering the heart of the ancient town. This is made up of winding alleys, steep stairways, and very picturesque views.
The municipality is committed to maintaining the historic center like a jewel: flowers, artisan workshops, and small restaurants emanating the aroma of Apulian cuisine are everywhere.
The highest part of the city is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a Gothic church with numerous details carved in white stone. The square also features the Vescovile Palace and the Roman excavations.
Per raggiungere Ostuni si lascia l’auto prima del centro storico e si procede a piedi, per addentrarsi nel cuore del borgo antico. Questo è composto da vicoli tortuosi, scale ripide e scorci molto suggestivi.
Il comune si impegna a mantenere il centro storico come una bomboniera: infatti ci sono dappertutto fiori, botteghe artigiane e piccoli ristoranti che sprigionano il profumo della cucina pugliese.
La parte più alta della città ospita la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, una chiesa di architettura gotica con numerosi dettagli scolpiti nella pietra bianca. Nella piazza ci sono anche il Palazzo Vescovile e gli scavi romani.

From the top of the city of Ostuni, the landscape is truly enchanting. There are numerous panoramic balconies from which you can admire the centuries-old olive trees and the Adriatic Sea in the background. In fact, just a few kilometers away are wonderful beaches with crystal-clear waters, renowned nationwide.

Dall’alto della città di Ostuni il paesaggio è davvero incantevole. Ci sono numerose balconate panoramiche, dalle quali si possono ammirare gli ulivi secolari e sullo sfondo il mar Adriatico. Infatti, a pochi km di distanza si raggiungono spiagge meravigliose con acque cristalline, di fama nazionale.
