One of the most beautiful Archaeological Museums in Italy

You already know: I love museums. Today's focus is the Taranto Archaeological Museum, located in the Puglia region of southern Italy.
The museum's official description already gives us a good idea of what we'll find inside: "It tells the story of the roots of southern Italy through the material testimonies of the people who inhabited it. Set out to discover the past to relive the stories that have shaped our present and prepare us to be the men and women of the future!"

Lo sapete già: adoro i musei. Il protagonista di oggi è il museo archeologico di Taranto, situato nella regione Puglia (sud Italia).
La descrizione ufficiale del museo ci fa già capire molto di quello che troveremo al suo interno: “E’ il racconto delle radici dell’Italia meridionale attraverso le testimonianze materiali delle genti che l’hanno abitata. Parti alla scoperta del passato per rivivere le storie che hanno costruito il nostro presente e ci preparano a essere uomini e donne del futuro!”.

This museum is one of the most prestigious museums in Italy and a priceless treasure trove for understanding the civilization of Magna Graecia.
Founded in 1887 by archaeologist Luigi Viola inside the former Convent of San Pasquale Baylon, the museum was born with the mission of preserving the heritage that emerged during the urban expansion of the modern city, which rested directly on an ancient city called Taras.

Fondato nel 1887 dall'archeologo Luigi Viola all'interno dell'ex Convento di San Pasquale Baylon, il museo è nato con la missione di preservare il patrimonio emerso durante l'espansione urbanistica della città moderna, che poggiava direttamente su una città antica chiamata Taras.

Today, after a radical renovation, the museum presents a structure that narrates over six thousand years of history, from the Paleolithic to the Early Middle Ages, through an exhibition lasting approximately two hours.
The beating heart of the collection is undoubtedly the Magna Graecia period, when Taranto was one of the cultural and economic capitals of the Mediterranean.
The highlight is the so-called Gold of Taranto: a stunning collection of gold jewelry, diadems, boat-shaped earrings, and finely crafted rings.
Alongside these treasures, we also have the Tomb of the Athlete, an exceptional burial discovered in 1959. It contains the perfectly preserved skeleton of a young aristocrat, winner of several races at the Panathenaic Games in Athens, surrounded by amphorae celebrating his sporting triumphs.
Oggi, dopo un radicale intervento di ristrutturazione, il museo si presenta come una struttura che narra oltre seimila anni di storia, dal Paleolitico all'Alto Medioevo, attraverso un percorso espositivo di circa 2 ore.
Il cuore pulsante della collezione è sicuramente il periodo magno-greco, epoca in cui Taranto fu una delle capitali culturali ed economiche del Mediterraneo.
Il pezzo forte è costituito dai cosiddetti Ori di Taranto: una collezione sbalorditiva di gioielli in oro, diademati, orecchini a navicella e anelli finemente lavorati.
Accanto a questi tesori, abbiamo anche la Tomba dell'Atleta, una sepoltura eccezionale scoperta nel 1959. Essa contiene lo scheletro perfettamente conservato di un giovane aristocratico, vincitore di diverse gare alle Panatenee di Atene, circondato da alcune anfore che celebravano i suoi trionfi sportivi.

But that's not all. The building also houses the Zeus of Ugento, a rare bronze statue from the Archaic period, and the Venuses of Parabita, small bone sculptures dating back approximately 18,000 years, which symbolized fertility.

Ma non è finita qui. L’edificio ospita anche lo Zeus di Ugento, una rarissima statua bronzea di epoca arcaica, e le Veneri di Parabita, piccole sculture in osso risalenti a circa 18.000 anni fa, che simboleggiavano la fertilità.

If I understood well, this is a museum that preserves the objects gathered from the Southern Italy area? When I wrote "local", it sounds small, but given of rich history of that part, it's one of the most prestigious... 😀
It's awesome to see objects like that and try to imagine our ancestors using them for their everyday needs... Unbelievable how amazing they look after thousands and thousands of years!! 😱
