Baroque style in Southern Italy
Hello, Hivers, and welcome back to my blog!
Today's post focuses on a city enchanting with its Baroque style and known as the "Florence of the South" for the majesty of its historic center.
I'm talking about Lecce, located in the southernmost part of the Puglia region, which I was fortunate enough to visit in 2025 with my boyfriend.

L’appuntamento di oggi riguarda una città che incanta per il suo stile barocco e che viene chiamata “la Firenze del Sud” per la maestosità del suo centro storico.
Sto parlando di Lecce, situata nell’estremo sud della regione Puglia, che ho avuto la fortuna di visitare nel 2025 insieme al mio fidanzato.
Walking through the alleys of Lecce means immersing yourself in the Baroque style, where the star is Lecce stone, an ivory-colored material with golden highlights.
The building that most amazed me is undoubtedly the Basilica of Santa Croce, a huge church with statues and decorations reminiscent of mythological figures, animals, and flowers.
Passeggiare tra i vicoli di Lecce significa immergersi nello stile barocco, dove la protagonista è la pietra leccese, un materiale dal color avorio con riflessi dorati.
L’edificio che mi ha stupito di più è senza dubbio la Basilica di Santa Croce, una grandissima chiesa con statue e decorazioni che ricordano figure mitologiche, animali e fiori.
The main square is called Piazza del Duomo, and here are other buildings of historical and artistic importance, such as the Bell Tower, the Bishop's Palace, and the Seminary.
In this city, you can also breathe in the sea air, as we are just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. Lecce is the beating heart of Salento, an area famous for its food and wine, maritime, and artistic tourism.
La piazza principale si chiama Piazza del Duomo e qui si trovano altri edifici di importanza storica e artistica come il Campanile, il Palazzo Vescovile e il Seminario.
In questa città si respira anche l’aria di mare, perché siamo a pochissimi chilometri dal Mar Mediterraneo. Lecce è il cuore pulsante del Salento, una zona famosa per il turismo enogastronomico, marittimo e artistico.
A curious fact that few know about is the tradition of the "shiluk", a term that refers to particular grotesque figures and masks found on the balconies and cornices of noble palaces.
What purpose did these strange faces serve? The aim was to ward off the evil eye and evil spirits from the homes.

Una curiosità che pochi conoscono è la tradizione delle “shiluk”, un termine che fa riferimento a delle particolari figure grottesche e maschere che si trovano posizionate sui balconi e sui cornicioni dei palazzi nobiliari.
A cosa servivano queste strane facce? L’obiettivo era scacciare il malocchio e gli spiriti maligni dalle dimore.

Good heavens, those are spectacularly artistic facades! 😍🙏... Thank you for sharing this @delilhavores friend!... Lecce isn't exactly one of the many Italian cities renowned for its Baroque architecture, but seeing this, I conclude that it has a lot to do with it!

Those grotesque figures might look odd but it is essential to ward off evils...what a beautiful irony. Lecce is huge and amazing, with all those buildings so firm and majestic. Hope you had a good stay @delilhavores ❤️
