A few days ago, on a walk along an important street in a municipality of the capital, I finally decided to enter a church that, although I didn't hear badly, considering its structure and decoration, it stops being majestic and sounds elegant. Which is accessed from the street by two stairs that meet and greet each other on a landing in front of its façade. I thought I would enter and find a lavish atmosphere, with exuberant and delicate decorations, as these religious institutions are accustomed to.

Hace unos días, en una caminata por una importante calle de un municipio de la capital, por fin decidí entrar a una iglesia que, aunque no oí mal, atendida su estructura y decorado, deja de ser majestuosa y de oírse elegante. A la que se accede desde la calle por dos escalinatas que se encuentran y saludan en un descanso frente a la fachada de la misma. Pensé entrar y encontrar un ambiente fastuoso, con exuberantes y delicadas decoraciones, como nos tienen acostumbradas estas instituciones religiosas.

But this one seemed too old and stark for my taste.

Pero esta me pareció demasiado vetusta y descarnada para mi gusto.

En medio de ese ambiente, recién la iglesia de mi pueblo, en un municipio del interior, pero con mucho (según mi criterio) mucho más atractiva y atendida que esta.

It was the rule of the conquerors of the new overseas lands that the first thing that was erected or built before founding a town was a hermitage or religious sanctuary with the name of the patron saint that would serve as the oratory of the region. This was the case since the founding of the first villas (cities) when the Spanish decided to settle in the new conquered lands.

Thus, each town or city has, according to the religious order (in principle Catholic), its own church, parish or whatever it was called due to its affiliation.

Fue regla de los conquistadores de las nuevas tierras de ultramar que lo primero que se erigía o se construía antes de fundar un poblado era una ermita o santuario religioso con el nombre del santo patrono que fungiría como oratorio de la comarca. Así fue desde la fundación de las primeras villas (ciudades) cuando los españoles decidieron asentarse en las nuevas tierras conquistadas.

Así, cada pueblo o ciudad tiene, según la orden religiosa (en principio católicas), su propia iglesia, parroquia o como se le llamase por su afiliación.

Thus, my people, following tradition, none other than Mrs. Juana Romero, our benefactor, donated the first caballeria of land to create the town. The first thing he built was a small wooden hermitage with a real guano roof, consecrated to San Joaquín, father of Mary and grandfather of Jesus, according to the Catholic liturgy.

That rustic construction evolved until it became a majestic parish located in the center of the town, overcoming a slope in its front that makes it the highest point with respect to the traditional buildings in the area. It should be said that this beautiful building is ecleptic, where it essentially combines elements of a super-late Creole baroque with other neoclassical ones.

Así, mi pueblo, siguiendo la tradición, nada más que la señora Juana Romero, nuestra benefactora, donó la primera caballería de tierra para crear el poblado. Lo primero que levantó fue una pequeña ermita de madera y techo de guano real, consagrada a San Joaquín, padre de María y abuelo de Jesús, según la liturgia católica.

Aquella construcción rústica evolucionó hasta convertirse en una majestuosa parroquia ubicada en el centro del poblado, superando una pendiente en su parte delantera que la convierte en el punto más alto con respecto a las edificaciones tradicionales del entorno. Cabe decir que esta bella edificación es ecléptica, donde combina esencialmente elementos de un barroco criollo supertardío con otros neoclásicos.

Today I decided to make a tourist visit to this elegant church in my town, here in the municipality of San Luis, in Pinar del Río. Although I have visited it several times, it was never to enjoy its surroundings.

I chose a day and a time when there was no service, and therefore there were no parishioners, only an altar boy sitting on one of the benches, but without his service clothing, and a couple of people from the civil service of the religious center.

So I was able to delight myself, observing, accompanied by the stillness and silence of the place, with most of the elements that make up the interior of the temple, which seems not to feel time passing in its high and powerful walls.

Hoy he decidido hacer una visita turística a esta elegante iglesia de mi pueblo, aquí en el municipio de San Luis, en Pinar del Río. Aunque la he visitado varias veces, nunca fue para recrearme en su entorno.

Escogí un día y una hora en que no se oficiaba, y por lo tanto no había feligreses, solo un monaguillo sentado en uno de los bancos, pero sin su indumentaria de oficio, y un par de personas del servicio civil del centro religioso.

Así que pude deleitarme, observando, acompañado por la quietud y el silencio del lugar, con la mayoría de los elementos que componen el interior del templo, que aparenta no sentir pasar el tiempo en sus elevadas y poderosas paredes.

Beautiful is its original ceiling made of precious wood, delicately varnished and excellently preserved.

Almost everything there is from when the construction was founded with the current structure. Three oil paintings of different saints, including San Joaquín, commissioned from the Academy of San Alejandro, and which are in very good condition.

The parish of San Joaquín has a single large gallery with high balustraded windows, where the Mañanero from the east enters and the nostalgic and warm sunset at dusk. Meanwhile, that of the celestial zenith bathes it fully in the strident hours of San Luis midday.

La posición privilegiada de la Iglesia la hace parecer altanera y orgullosa, a pesar de ser prácticamente el edificio más longevo de la comarca. Reta al resto del caserío a lucir como ella.

Hermoso es su techo original de maderas preciosas, delicadamente barnizadas y excelentemente conservado.

Allí casi todo es de cuando se fundó la construcción con la estructura actual. Tres pinturas al óleo de diferentes santos, incluyendo a San Joaquín, encargadas a la Academia de San Alejandro, y que se encuentran en muy buen estado.

La parroquia de San Joaquín es de una sola galería amplia y con altas ventanas balaustradas, por donde entra el Mañanero del este y el nostálgico y cálido del ocaso al atardecer. Mientras, el del cenit celestial la baña a plenitud en las estridentes horas del mediodía sanluiseño.

The privileged position of the Church makes it seem haughty and proud, despite being practically the oldest building in the region. She challenges the rest of the hamlet to look like her.

Many agree (including specialists) that this is one of the most beautiful churches in the West, and I modestly also believe that this is the case. And if you don't believe me, I simply invite you to come pay a visit when you have the time and the way.

I really enjoyed this visit and, from inside, I was also able to observe, taking advantage of the height, part of the town, as it changes the point of view.

Muchos coinciden (incluyendo especialistas) en que esta es una de las iglesias más hermosas de Occidente, y yo modestamente también creo que es así. Y si no me lo creen, simplemente los invito a que vengan a hacerle una visita cuando se les haga camino y tiempo.
