Havana, old but interesting! ,(en/es)

One day, when in Havana there was a high effervescence of what was then called the Plastic Arts, they gave me a brochure promoting a personal exhibition whose title was "Old, but Havana" and it jokingly showed, almost reaching a "Naive" style or way of doing, a city in ruins.

The title struck me as funny, but at the same time reflective, as it spoke of an environment in a deplorable state and of the artist's vision towards a call for attention through aesthetic discourse. At that time, the restoration project promoted by Eusebio Leal, the city's historian, was already in full swing.

From there to here, that "Old, but interesting Havana" is enjoyi

ng a profound restoration, a also renewed atmosphere in its archaic architectural structures and in the urban area in general, with the reconstruction of parks and public squares, and the creation of others taking advantage of the spaces resulting from the demolition of buildings that could no longer be rescued.

The megaproject converted old buildings and palaces, which were part of an unpleasant urban landscape, into schools, offices, public establishments and homes, which changed the image of the old city in the eyes of Cuban visitors and foreigners who visit us from other latitudes of the planet.

Although not all the restoration needs could be met and many places of historical or heritage importance are waiting to be touched by the prodigious hands of restorers, Havana added more importance and beauty to its years.

And although Havana is really not just Old Havana, it is this part of the Havana capital that attracts the most tourists and other types of visitors for its history, architecture and cultural movement, traveling through every artery where the symbols of our identity as Cubans mix, like in no other city in the country.

An environment created by man for centuries, where the harmonious fusion between the ancient and the modern goes narrating, century after century, its own history. Old Havana, ours and everyone's, the older, the more interesting.

A city to visit, take care of and love. An urban landscape of unrepeatable beauty.

Un día, cuando en La Habana había una elevada efervescencia de las entonces llamadas Artes Plásticas, me entregaron un folleto donde se promocionaba una exposición personal cuyo título era "Vieja, pero Habana" y mostraba jocosamente, casi llegando a un estilo o modo de hacer "Naif", a una ciudad en ruinas.

El título me resultó gracioso, pero a la vez reflexivo, pues hablaba de un entorno en estado deplorable y de la visión del artista hacia un llamado de atención a través del discurso estético. Por aquel entonces, ya estaba a toda marcha el proyecto de restauración impulsado por Eusebio Leal, el historiador de la ciudad.

De allá para acá, esa "Habana Vieja, pero interesante" disfruta de una profunda restauración, un también renovado ambiente en sus arcaicas estructuras arquitectónicas y en el ámbito urbanístico en general, con la reconstrucción de parques y plazas públicas, y la creación de otros aprovechando los espacios producto de demoliciones de edificios que ya no podían ser rescatados.

El megaproyecto convirtió antiguos edificios y palacetes, que formaban parte de un paisaje urbanístico desagradable, en escuelas, oficinas, establecimientos públicos y viviendas, que cambiaron la imagen de la añeja ciudad ante los ojos de los visitantes cubanos y de los foráneos que nos visitan desde otras latitudes del planeta.

Aunque no se pudo llegar a todas las necesidades de restauración y muchos lugares de importancia histórica o patrimonial esperan por ser tocados por las manos prodigiosas de los restauradores, La Habana incorporó más importancia y belleza a sus años.

Y aunque La Habana realmente no es solo La Habana Vieja, es esta parte de la capital habanera la que más turistas y otros tipos de visitantes atrae por su historia, arquitectura y movimiento cultural, recorriendo cada arteria donde se mezclan, como en ninguna otra ciudad del país, los símbolos de nuestra identidad como cubanos.

Un entorno creado por el hombre durante siglos, donde en la fusión armónica entre lo antiguo y lo moderno va narrando, siglo tras siglo, su propia historia. La Habana Vieja, nuestra y de todos, cuanto más vieja, más interesante.

Una ciudad para visitarla, cuidarla y amarla. Un paisaje urbanístico de belleza irrepetible.
