The Recoleta Cemetery is one of the most visited places by tourists exploring the Argentine capital for the first time. It's true that the remains of heroes of independence and other notable figures like Evita rest there, but in my opinion, Recoleta is overrated. It's very small, there's nowhere to sit, it has almost no vegetation, and the entrance fee is very expensive, not to mention that many people book a tour, which is even more expensive. Today, I want to recommend a similar, perhaps even better, experience at a much more affordable price.

Also known as the Western Cemetery, Chacarita Cemetery takes its name from the neighborhood in which it is located. Spanning 95 hectares, it's the largest cemetery in the city and one of the two most famous, along with the aforementioned Recoleta Cemetery. But unlike Recoleta, this cemetery has many trees and some benches, allowing visitors to find respite from the sun, especially in summer, and rest a while before continuing their tour. In 1871, Buenos Aires suffered a fever epidemic that claimed the lives of thousands of citizens. The existing cemeteries became insufficient (Recoleta Cemetery prohibited burials of those who had died from the epidemic), and it was necessary to build more cemeteries. After some years and certain administrative changes, it was finally named the Western Cemetery in 1896, and in 1903, the Buenos Aires City Crematorium was inaugurated there. Yes, the Recoleta Cemetery is more famous, but only because of the neighborhood it's in, since Recoleta is more touristy and, for some, more beautiful. However, in the Chacarita Cemetery, you can visit the tombs of famous figures like the great Aníbal Troilo, buried in the Corner of the Notables, next to Agustín Magaldi and Roberto Goyeneche; very close to the writer Alfonsina Storni. But without a doubt, the greatest figure resting there is the legendary Carlos Gardel. Many fans of this famous tango singer leave a lit cigarette as an offering between his fingers. In the cemetery you can also see a bust of Evita, who is actually buried in La Recoleta, and initially the remains of Juan Domingo Perón rested there, but were moved after his tomb was desecrated in the eighties.

Also related to music, but much more recently, singer-songwriter Gustavo Cerati, leader, vocalist, and guitarist of Soda Stereo, is buried in the cemetery, not in a mausoleum like those that were customary in the past, but in a niche, next to his father. Many people go there to leave offerings related to his music and the history of his band.

The Greek-style entrance, the 95 hectares of land, its gardens, the large number of ancient mausoleums, the names that are buried there, and especially its completely free access for foreigners and residents, make visiting this cemetery, in my opinion, a better plan than going to the Recoleta cemetery, especially if you are a foreigner because most of the names buried in Recoleta belong to the time of independence and - except for Evita - are names unknown to non-Argentinians. Now, it must be said that the area where Chacarita Cemetery is located isn't as beautiful as Recoleta, and due to its large size, the cemetery has been the victim of thefts and desecrations of graves, with sculptures and other metal ornaments being stolen in large quantities. Thousands of kilograms of metal have been extracted to be melted down and/or sold illegally. In this respect, the local government has an important task to perform to preserve the heritage of a country that is always proud of its history and its figures. As a final note, I'll mention that Jorge Newbery, a pioneer of Argentine aviation and a classmate of Thomas Alva Edison, also has his mausoleum there. The airport known as Aeroparque was named in his honor. If any of you have visited both cemeteries, tell me which is your favorite: la Recoleta or Chacarita? And for those who haven't been, which one would you like to visit? I'll read your comments.

I went to Recoleta last month, first time in BA, so of course I had to do all the touristy things.
The entrance fee wasn't cheap, I imagine it's catered for international tourists and not many locals go? And of course everyone goes to see Evita's tomb. It would have been nice to visit Chacarita to compare the two, next time maybe
I would day it might due to the location. Recoleta is more turistic and maybe that's why tusrists go there instead. I hope you can go back and see Chacarita as well. Thank you for reading.
I can see that the cemetery is not just a place for the dead but also a miniature city of mausoleums and monuments. What I liked most in this blog are the ornate sculptures and detailed carvings.
That's one of my favorite things too!

Saludos.
Interesante, muchas gracias por la recomendación 😊
