One of the things I've tried to show in this series on Museums of Buenos Aires is the diversity of these kinds of places that exist in the Argentine capital. Temples of memory, guardians of history, they are sometimes dedicated to a specific person, but also to a historical period, an event, or a specific type of art.

Una de las cosas que he intentado mostrar en esta serie de Museos de Buenos Aires es la diversidad de este tipo de lugares que existen en la capital argentina. Templos de la memoria, guardianes de la historia, están dedicados a veces a un personaje específico, pero también a un período histórico, a una comunidad, a un episodio o a un tipo específico de arte.

One morning I went early to explore La Boca and Caminito, with its vibrant colors and festive atmosphere. On my way back, I headed north to cross the San Telmo fair, planning to continue up towards Plaza de Mayo, but near Avenida San Juan, I saw a huge building that caught my eye with its brick walls. It was the Museum of Modern Art. I approached, but discovered it was closed. However, as I got closer to the door, I noticed another art-related establishment next door. A glass building, about six stories high, with large white and red letters on its facade: MACBA. I had arrived at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the City of Buenos Aires. Inaugurated on September 1, 2012, it is one of the city's newest museums, and another interesting fact was that it's privately owned. That is, it doesn't belong to the state, but to a private individual, the art collector Aldo Rubino, who began his collection in the late 1980s. As his holdings grew, he had the concrete idea of ​​founding a museum to display them, highlight the artists, and also to encourage the creativity of artists, both present and future. I would have liked to know where Rubino kept all these works before building the museum. He must have had a huge house, or several.

Un día por la mañana me fui temprano a recorrer La Boca y a conocer Caminito, con sus colores vivos y su vibra festiva. De regreso me dirigía hacia el norte para atravesar la feria de San Telmo y mi plan era seguir subiendo hacia Plaza de Mayo, pero a la altura de la Avenida San Juan vi una construcción enorme que llamó mi atención con sus paredes de ladrillos. Se trataba del Museo de Arte Moderno. Me acerqué, pero descubrí que estaba cerrado. Sin embargo, al haberme acercado a la puerta del lugar noté que a su lado se encontraba otro lugar relacionado con el arte. Una construcción de vidrio, de unos seis pisos de altura y en su fachada unas letras grandes en blanco y rojo: MACBA. Había llegado al Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Inaugurado el 01 de septiembre de 2012, este es uno de los museos más nuevos de la ciudad y otro dato que me pareció interesante fue descubrir que se trata de un lugar privado. Es decir, no pertenece al estado, sino a un particular, el coleccionista de arte Aldo Rubino quien comenzó su colección a finales de los 80 y al ver que su patrimonio comenzaba a crecer tuvo la idea concreta de fundar un museo para mostrarlas, destacar a los artistas y también para impulsar la creatividad de los artistas del presente y del futuro. Me habría gustado saber ¿en dónde guardaba Rubino todas estas obras antes de construir el museo? Debía tener una casa enorme, o varias viviendas.

The collection spans from the mid-20th century to the present day and is not static. Albino, now through the Museum, continues to acquire new works by established artists, while also exhibiting pieces by emerging artists whom he wishes to support. In this sense, the MACBA functions not only as a guardian of art's recent past but also as an art gallery that promotes the present.

Las obras de la colección abarcan desde mediados del siglo XX hasta la actualidad y además no es estática. Albino, ahora a través del Museo, sigue incorporando nuevas obras de artistas conocidos, pero también exhibiendo trabajos de otros artistas que están comenzando y a quienes quiere apoyar de alguna forma. En ese sentido, el MACBA funciona también como una galería de arte impulsora del presente y no sólo como guardián del pasado más cercano del arte.

The museum's interior has six levels: two underground, the ground floor at street level where the reception and ticket office are located, and three upper levels. The rooms are spacious, well-lit, creating a sense of tranquility, but also a certain emptiness. The spaces aren't very large, and I felt they displayed few works for the available space. However, I later learned that the museum's program includes multiple activities, workshops, and courses, so perhaps it's easier to organize the rooms with fewer objects. One thing I liked about the building's design was the ramp along one side, which allows visitors to go up and down to each level. Another detail noticeable on the facade is that, although it's a fairly recent construction, they sought to maintain the height of the surrounding buildings and give a sense of continuity in the lines, while also showcasing a clearly modern design in keeping with what the place represents. El interior del museo tiene seis niveles: dos subterráneos, la planta baja a nivel de calle en donde se encuentra la recepción y la boletería y tres niveles superiores. Son salas amplias, con buena iluminación que producen un sensación de quietud, pero también de vacío de alguna forma. Los espacios no son muy grandes, pero sentí que mostraban pocas obras para el espacio disponible, pero luego supe que el programa del museo incluye actividades múltiples, para talleres y cursos, entonces quizás sea más fácil organizar las salas si hay menos objetos. Una cosa que me gustó del diseño del edificio fue la rampa a un costado por la que el visitante puede descender y ascender a cada uno de los niveles; y otro detalle que se nota en la fachada es que si bien es una construcción bastante reciente, buscaron mantener la altura de los edificios colindantes y dar una sensación de continuidad de las líneas, pero a su vez mostrando un diseño claramente moderno acorde a lo que el lugar representa, ¿a ustedes les gustan este tipo de lugares? ¿o les gustan más los los lugares más clásicos?
