If you've been following my travel posts for a while, you'll have noticed that one of the things I enjoy most when hiking or mountaineering is finding high points in nature to observe the landscape from above. However, this isn't a habit I only have in natural environments. I do the same thing when I'm in the city, and many of the most beautiful images I have in my memories of visiting different cities come from these very spots.

Si han seguido mis publicaciones de viajes desde hace un tiempo se habrán dado cuenta de que una de las cosas que más disfruto cuando hago senderismo o montañismo es ubicar puntos elevados en medio de la naturaleza para observar la tierra desde lo alto. Sin embargo, no es una costumbre que tenga únicamente cuando se trata de entornos naturales. Hago lo mismo cuando estoy en medio de la ciudad y muchas de las imágenes más hermosas que conservo en el recuerdo de mi visita a diferentes ciudades provienen precisamente de estos lugares.

One of the cities I've visited and whose views I've most often enjoyed from above is Buenos Aires. I've been to the Argentine capital a couple of times and have always looked for a way to access a viewpoint, a terrace, an elevated street, a tower, a balcony—any space that allows me to observe the neighborhoods and buildings from a good ten meters above the ground, although sometimes less is enough. But first things first, what aerial view could be more meaningful than observing the entire city from a plane? On my first trip, I landed at Aeroparque around 8:00 am and could see the Río de la Plata and the entire Costanera Norte area as we approached. But I didn't take any pictures. On my second trip, I landed in the same place much earlier, around 4:00 am, and I could watch as the tiny lights that looked like stars gradually became closer and brighter.I've seen several cities at night from an airplane, but Buenos Aires is my favorite. Perhaps it's because of its size or the regularity of its streets, I don't know, but I like it more than Santiago or Concepción, two other cities I've been able to see at night as if they were aerial maps, feeling like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Later, on my various trips, I always try to stay in hostels with a high view or a nice terrace. I stayed in a hostel in Monserrat with a sixth-floor terrace that was an ideal place to watch the sunset and the surrounding streets while enjoying a cold drink in the summer. Shortly after, I booked a room in another hostel in Recoleta whose reception was on the sixth floor, above which there was also a terrace with a breathtaking view of the neighborhood's iconic cemetery. Many might think that the sight of a necropolis is not the most ideal landscape, especially at night, but the location of that low-rise block, in the middle of other buildings, allows one to appreciate the streets from above and the landscape in the distance a little better, beyond the walls that limit the eternal rest of those souls.

Una de las ciudades que he visitado y que más he podido contemplar desde las alturas es Buenos Aires. He estado en la capital argentina en un par de ocasiones y siempre he buscado la manera de acceder a un mirador, una terraza, una calle elevada, una torre, un balcón, cualquier espacio que me permita observar los barrios y los edificios desde una buena decena de metros de altitud, aunque a veces basta con menos.

Pero primero lo primero, ¿qué vista aérea puede ser más significativa que observar la ciudad entera desde un avión? En mi primer viaje, aterricé en el Aeroparque a eso de las 8:00 am y pude ver el río de la plata y toda la zona de la Costanera Norte mientras nos acercábamos. Pero no tomé fotos. En mi segundo viaje, aterricé en el mismo lugar mucho más temprano, a eso de las 4:00 am y pude observar cómo las diminutas luces que parecían estrellas se fueron haciendo cada vez más cercanas y brillantes. He observado varias ciudades durante la noche desde un avión, pero Buenos Aires es mi favorita. Tal vez a causa de su extensión o de la regularidad de sus calles, no lo sé, pero me gusta más que Santiago o que Concepción, otras dos ciudades que he podido ver en la noche como si de una cartografía aérea se tratase, sintiéndome Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Luego, en mis diferentes viajes, siempre trato de hospedarme en hostales que tengan un vista elevada o una linda terraza. Me hospedé en un hostal en Monserrat con una terraza en el sexto piso que era un lugar ideal para observar el atardecer y las calles colindantes disfrutando de alguna bebida fría en el verano. Poco después reservé una habitación en otro hostal en Recoleta cuya recepción estaba en un sexto piso, sobre el cual había también una terraza con una impresionante vista hacia el icónico cementerio del barrio. Muchos pensarán que la vista de una necrópolis no es el paisaje más ideal, especialmente de noche, pero la ubicación de esa manzana de poca altura, en medio de otros edificios, hace que uno pueda apreciar un poco mejor las calles desde lo alto y el paisaje a lo lejos, más allá de los muros que limitan el eterno descanso de aquellas almas.

And of course, then all those adventures, guided tours, and information you find online about rooftop terraces for admiring the city come into play. I took one that covered a historic city block, ending on the rooftop of a fifteen-story building with a 360° view. I remember doing it during my first few days in the city and immediately comparing it to Santiago. In the Chilean capital, there are some areas where twenty- or thirty-story buildings abound, which severely obstructs the view, but with the exception of the skyscrapers in Puerto Madero, in Buenos Aires there are very few buildings taller than fifteen stories.

Y por supuesto, luego entran en juego todas esas aventuras, visitas guiadas, tours o datos que se obtienen en internet sobre las terrazas para contemplar la ciudad. Yo tomé uno que recorría una manzana patrimonial, finalizando en la azotea de un edificio de quince pisos con vista de 360°. Recuerdo que lo hice durante mis primeros días en la ciudad y en el momento lo comparé con Santiago. En la capital chilena, hay algunos sectores en donde abundan los edificios de 20 o 30 niveles, lo que obstruye tremendamente la visibilidad, pero a excepción de los rascacielos de Puerto Madero, en Buenos Aires hay muy pocos edificios que vayan más allá de los 15 pisos.

One of my favorite views of the city, and one I recommend to everyone who has the opportunity to visit the Argentine capital, is the one you get from the top of the Torre de los Ingleses (English Tower). From there, you can see the facades of the Retiro train station, catch a glimpse of the buildings in Puerto Madero, and—my personal favorite—look down at the plaza below the tower and San Martín Park with the iconic Kavanagh Building to the left. The mix of urban planning, buildings, trees, and the flow of people and vehicles creates a beautiful scene. However, you don't need to climb so high or book a guided tour like those offered at the Barolo Palace to appreciate Buenos Aires from above. Sometimes, simply going up to a second floor is enough, and if it's well-located, it provides a new perspective of the city. I say this in reference to a café located right on the corner of Florida and Mitre streets. Buying a coffee and going up to that second floor gives you a breathtaking panoramic view of the people who, just a few meters below, are heading to the subway, to their jobs, or to Plaza de Mayo. So there you have some of the places from which you can contemplate the Argentine capital from a higher perspective, but of course, there are many more, such as the rooftop of the City Museum, the Palacio Libertad, or the Galería Güemes. You just have to have the first experience, and then I assure you that you'll want to keep going up to all the places to see the city. Have you been to any of these places? Una de mis vistas favoritas de la ciudad y que recomiendo a todos los que tengan la oportunidad de visitar la capital argentina, es la que se obtiene al subir hasta la torre de los ingleses. Desde allí se pueden contemplar las fachadas de las estaciones de trenes de Retiro,se alcanzan a ver los edificios de Puerto Madero y - mi vista favorita - se puede contemplar la plaza debajo de la torre y el parque San Martín con el mítico Edificio Kavanagh a la izquierda. La mezcla de urbanismo, edificios, árboles y flujo de personas y vehículos, crea una composición muy linda de ver. Sin embargo, tampoco hace falta subir tanto o agendar alguna visita guiada como esas que hacen al Palacio Barolo para apreciar Buenos Aires desde lo alto. A veces es suficiente con subir hasta un segundo piso que, si está bien ubicado, brinda una nueva perspectiva de la ciudad. Digo esto con referencia a una cafetería que está ubicada justo en la esquina de la calle Florida con Mitre. Comprar un café y subir a ese segundo piso lo deja a uno con una panorámica impresionante de la gente que, unos pocos metros por debajo, se desplaza hacia el Subte, a sus trabajos o hacia Plaza de Mayo. Allí tienen entonces algunos de los lugares desde los cuales pueden contemplar la capital argentina desde una perspectiva más elevada, pero por supuesto que existen muchos más, como la azotea del Museo de la ciudad, la del Palacio Libertad, o la de la Galería Güemes, sólo tienen que tener una primera experiencia y luego les aseguro que van a seguir queriendo subir a todos los lugares a ver la ciudad, ¿han estado en algunos de estos lugares? ¿Cuál fue su fotografía favorita?
