Manrique's Stairs: 69 steps closer to heaven [Eng-Esp]

Greetings, fellow lovers of architectural gems! Welcome back to my blog, where today we'll be visiting "Las escaleras de Manrique" (Manrique's Stairs), an emblem of the city of San Cristóbal in the state of Táchira, Venezuela. Join me and I'll show you around.

If we go to Calle 7 in San Cristóbal, right on Carrera 10, we will find a whole street of stairs leading up to Carrera 11. It is unusual to see a street of stairs, so I ventured to climb them.

After doing some research, I learned that this difference in elevation between the avenues was brilliantly solved with a 69-step pedestrian walkway. The architect in charge of this project, engineer Manrique, had his own style and wanted to leave his mark on the city with the first staircase in 1937.

I confess that in my 37 years, it was the first time I had climbed these steps. I had no idea that up close it looked like a small boulevard with planters on the sides, murals, and beautiful streetlights.

As I climbed the 69 steps, I really appreciated the six landings between every ten steps. These wide spaces serve to give the staircase more elevation.

At the top of Carrera 11, we find a small square called Bicentenario. It has a perfect viewpoint that shows us the city and its imposing buildings.

I had a pleasant time climbing the stairs. It was fun to discover this place, which had been hidden from my eyes all this time.

In the small square, there is a lot of ornamental vegetation and a beautiful araguaney tree adorns the top of the stairs.

See the top of the Gothic towers of the San José Church. The civic center and the mountains that guard the city. I really liked the view, and the route is excellent for a walk.

Also at the top, we find the María Auxiliadora girls' school and the chapel of the San Antonio nursing home. It is a very simple structure that still stands one level higher.

I am surprised to see several houses on either side of these stairs. It must be unusual to give the address of these houses, and I think the most complicated thing is that you can't park your car at these houses because the street is full of steps.

Although I think the structures of these stairs are well maintained, I think the city could take a little more care to preserve them, knowing that they are a relic and very important for the people who walk around here. Painting, cleaning, and gardening would not go amiss on the Manrique stairs.

These stairs are more than just a connector between one street and another; they are part of the city's architecture and also part of people's routine for cutting corners, getting home, and as a point of reference.

I love how a trip to the bank and running some errands can turn into a nice walk.

Si llegamos a la calle 7 de San Cristóbal, justamente en la carrera 10, encontraremos toda una calle de escaleras que conducen hasta la carrera 11. Es poco común ver una calle de escaleras, así que me aventuré a subir.

Investigando un poco, me enteré que este desnivel entre las carreras fue solucionado brillantemente con el paso para peatones de 69 escalones. El arquitecto que estaba a cargo de esta obra, el ingeniero Manrique, tenía su estilo propio y quiso dejar este bonito sello en la ciudad con las primeras escaleras en el año 1937.

Confieso que en mis 37 años era la primera vez que subía por estos escalones. No tenía ni idea que de cerca se veía como un pequeño boulevard con jardineras en los costados, murales y unos bonitos faroles.

Mientras subía los 69 escalones realmente agradecí los 6 descansos que había entre cada 10 escalones. Unos amplios espacios que sirven para darle más elevación a la escalera.

Al llegar a la parte superior de la carrera 11, encontramos una pequeña plaza llamada Bicentenario. Tiene un perfecto mirador que nos muestra la ciudad y sus imponentes edificaciones.

Pasé un momento agradable subiendo las escaleras. Fue divertido conocer este lugar, que para mi estuvo oculto frente a mis ojos todo este tiempo.

En la placita hay una gran cantidad de vegetación ornamental y un hermoso araguaney adornan lo más alto de las escaleras.

Ver lo alto de las torres góticas de la Iglesia San José. El centro cívico y las montañas que custodian la ciudad. Me gustó mucho la vista y el recorrido es excelente como un paseo.

También en la parte de arriba encontramos el colegio para niñas María Auxiliadora y la capilla del asilo San Antonio. Es una estructura muy sencilla que todavía se levanta un nivel más arriba.

Me sorprende como hay varias casas a los ldos de esta escalera. Debe ser algo fuera de lo común dar la dirección de estas viviendas, y creo que lo más complicado es que no se pueden guardar los automóviles en estas casa pues la calle está llena fe escalones.

Aunque me parece que están bien cuidadas las estructuras de estas escaleras, me parece que la ciudad podría preocuparse un poco más por conservarlas, sabiendo que son una reliquia y que son muy importantes para las personas que circulan por aquí. Pintura, limpieza y jardinería no estarían de más en las escaleras de Manrique.

Estas escaleras son más que un conector entre una carrera y otra, son parte de la arquitectura de la ciudad y también son parte de la rutina de las personas para cortar camino, para llegar a sus casa y para punto de referencia.

Me encanta como un recorrido por el banco y a hacer algunas diligencias, puede llegar a convertirse en el un bonito paseo.
