Explorando las cuevas de acarite // Exploring the caves of Acarite

Lo bueno de estar rodeado de tantas bellezas naturales es que ante un cambio de planes las segundas opciones no dejan de ser muy buenas. En nuestro caso, el destino inicial eran las cataratas de Hueque, pero ante la gran cantidad de visitantes por causa de la semana feriada decidimos apuntar un poco más hacia la montaña, tomando una buena aventura en dirección hacia las cuevas de acarite, las cuales también están situadas en el extenso territorio que corresponde al parque nacional Juan Crisóstomo Falcón por la zona de la sierra en el estado Falcón de Venezuela.

La ruta a seguir tenía dos opciones: una por la carretera y otra por un camino boscoso en la zona más interna de la montaña. A fin de disfrutar a pleno de este lugar decidimos ir montaña adentro, por un camino bien extendido y en base a piedras conocido como el camino de los españoles, sendero que trae su propia historia y cultura arraigada al lugar. Desde el inicio todo es totalmente copado con mucha vegetación y con un clima que se va haciendo más fresco a medida que vas subiendo. Como hay que cruzar prácticamente una montaña para llegar a la zona de las cuevas, decidimos llevar palos a modo de cayados para espantar algún animal o despejar los tramos más abarrotados de hojas y piedras.

The great thing about being surrounded by so much natural beauty is that, when plans change, the alternative options are still very good. In our case, our original destination was the Hueque waterfalls, but given the large number of visitors due to the bank holiday, we decided to head a little further into the mountains, embarking on a great adventure towards the Acarite caves, which are also situated within the vast territory of the Juan Crisóstomo Falcón National Park in the mountainous region of Falcón State, Venezuela.

There were two routes to choose from: one along the main road and the other along a wooded path deep within the mountains. To make the most of this place, we decided to head into the mountains along a long, stone-paved path known as the Camino de los Españoles, a trail steeped in its own history and local culture. From the start, the path is completely overgrown with lush vegetation, and the climate grows cooler as you climb. As you practically have to cross a mountain to reach the cave area, we decided to take sticks to use as walking poles to scare off any animals or clear the sections most cluttered with leaves and stones.

El punto más alto es de 1022 metros sobre el mar, para luego bajar y ya empezar a explorar las cuevas. Nuestra primera parada fue la cueva de cuarzo , la cual destaca por su profundidad y por la formación del mineral al cual está asociado su nombre. Una anécdota fue que al llegar nos recomendaron no hacer mucho ruido debido a las abejas que a ciertas horas también empiezan a merodear por las entradas de las cuevas. Ya estando en el lugar se percibe esa mezcla de frío, oscuridad y un silencio bastante relajante, mientras vas caminando sobre enormes piedras de cuarzo que por muchos años ya se han ido formando dentro de la cueva.

Después nos dirigimos a la cueva Los Zárraga, no tan profunda como la primera pero bastante conocida por su historia que data desde los tiempos de las colonias en nuestro país. Esta cueva también tiene la particularidad de tener varias entradas, lo cual la convierte en un verdadero laberinto una vez que ya estás adentro. Por último llegamos a la cueva del riíto de acarite, por donde también pasa el río al que hace mención su nombre. En este lugar y para estos meses donde el verano es bastante fuerte hay que meterse bien adentro de la cueva para poder disfrutar del agua que en ese lugar es extremadamente fría y muy trasparente.

The highest point is 1,022 metres above sea level, after which the path descends and we begin exploring the caves. Our first stop was the Quartz Cave, which is notable for its depth and for the mineral formations from which it takes its name. One amusing anecdote was that, upon arrival, we were advised not to make too much noise because, at certain times of day, bees also start to swarm around the cave entrances. Once inside, you can feel that blend of cold, darkness and a rather soothing silence, as you walk over enormous quartz stones that have been forming inside the cave for many years.

We then headed to Los Zárraga Cave, not as deep as the first but well known for its history dating back to the colonial era in our country. This cave is also unique in having several entrances, which makes it a veritable labyrinth once you’re inside. Finally, we reached the Acarite River Cave, through which the river mentioned in its name also flows. In this spot, and during these months when the summer heat is intense, you have to venture deep into the cave to enjoy the water, which is extremely cold and crystal-clear there.

Por el camino montañoso la ruta es más larga y de mucho más cuidado, pero a la vez es la mejor opción para sentir directamente esa humedad tropical que parece cubrir todo el bosque. Quizás una de las cosas más incómodas a las que puedes enfrentarte en este recorrido es la presencia de muchas garrapatas, y esto debido a la cantidad de ganado que hace vida a través de todas esas hectáreas que comprenden a dicho parque nacional. Ropas largas y un buen repelente son las opciones ideales para poder protegernos y disfrutar del paseo sin tanta molestia.También es muy importante llevar agua para poder hidratarse ya que prácticamente en toda esta zona la presencia de este vital líquido es muy escaso.

Fueron tres horas de ida y tres horas de vuelta, un tiempo que aunque parece mucho prácticamente se fue volando para todo lo que logramos hacer. Después de esta maravillosa experiencia, las puertas hacia una segunda aventura en este lugar quedan abiertas, quizás viniendo mejor preparados para adentrarnos aún más y llegar hasta el rincón más profundo de estas cuevas. Desde ahora no solo pensaré en las cataratas de Hueque sino que también tendré como una buena opción la oportunidad de poder explorar e incursionar más en las cuevas de acarite, un lugar bastante especial para poder compartir en compañía de buenos aventureros que no le teman a las profundidades ni a la oscuridad.

The mountainous route is longer and requires much greater care, but it is also the best way to experience first-hand the tropical humidity that seems to envelop the entire forest. Perhaps one of the most unpleasant things you may encounter on this trail is the presence of numerous ticks, due to the large number of cattle grazing across the vast expanse of land that makes up this national park. Long-sleeved clothing and a good insect repellent are the ideal ways to protect yourself and enjoy the walk without too much bother. It’s also very important to bring water to stay hydrated, as this vital liquid is in very short supply throughout practically the whole area.

It took three hours to get there and three hours to return; a time that, although it seems long, practically flew by given everything we managed to do. After this wonderful experience, the doors to a second adventure in this place remain open – perhaps next time we’ll come better prepared to venture even further in and reach the deepest corners of these caves. From now on, I won’t just be thinking about the Hueque waterfalls; I’ll also have the opportunity to explore and venture further into the Acarite caves, a rather special place to share in the company of fellow adventurers who aren’t afraid of the depths or the darkness.
