To be honest... I felt a certain fondness for this castle, and I couldn't explain why! I think it was a mixture of things: the peace, and the feeling that the place was so isolated. There were only a few people in this village, which felt completely cut off from the world. The walls and the keep were incredibly beautiful and well-preserved.🏰🚩

This castle stands on the highest hill in the small village of Terena, very close to the Lucefecit reservoir. Its architecture features a unique, irregular pentagonal plan. Dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, it was fortified during the Reconquista and includes some Manueline touches. The tower is inaccessible, and there is no paved road leading into the castle; inside, there is only vegetation and earth. However, you can walk along its walls.💚🌍
Este castillo se eleva en la colina más alta de la pequeña aldea de Terena, muy próximo al embalse de Lucefecit. Entre su arquitectura destaca una planta pentagonal irregular única. Data de los siglos XIII y XIV, y fue fortificado en la era de la Reconquista, mostrando algunos toques de estilo manuelino. No tiene acceso a la torre, tampoco cuenta con calzada y por dentro solo hay vegetación y tierra; sin embargo, puedes caminar por sus murallas.💂🏻♀️🗺️
It's one of the most isolated and well-preserved castles I've visited so far. I think if I saw four people in the entire village, that was a lot. It's free to enter and has only one gate. It also has set opening hours, so check Google Maps to avoid surprises; I believe it closes at 6:00 PM. It is so isolated that you can only get here with a rental car. Is it worth it? Absolutely!💂🏻♀️
Es uno de los castillos más aislados y mejor preservados que he visitado hasta ahora. Creo que si vi a cuatro personas en toda la aldea, fue mucho. Es gratuito, tiene una sola puerta y cuenta con horarios de apertura, por lo que es mejor revisar Google Maps para no llevarse una sorpresa; creo que cierra a las 18:00. This is definitely one of the top 5 most incredible castles I've visited—wow! There are many things to highlight: firstly, it's beautifully preserved; secondly, entry is free up to a certain point, and you only pay about 5 euros if you want to enter the museum; thirdly, check Google Maps carefully because they have set closing times; fourthly, there is parking available, and Vila Viçosa is a much more centrally located town with public transport options🌍🚙
Definitivamente este es uno de los top 5 castillos más increíbles que he visitado, ¡guau! Built in the 14th century by King Denis, it has a medieval Gothic style, though it was later adapted during the Reconquista into a fortification equipped with various artillery pieces. Unlike Terena, this was the seat of the Dukes of Braganza, hence its great historical importance and complex structure.🚩🌏

Dinis y adaptado posteriormente durante la era de las reconquistas, tiene también un estilo gótico medieval, pero con modificaciones para funcionar como una fortificación con varias piezas de artillería. A diferencia de Terena, este fue sede de los duques de Braganza, de ahí su gran importancia histórica y su compleja estructura.🌍🚙
Unlike Terena, it has a square floor plan surrounded by a moat, which I found amazing because I'd never seen anything like it. I've never visited a castle where the moat surrounding the fortress was preserved and where you have to cross a drawbridge to enter! This one does have a causeway, which is very well-preserved and clean—one of the best castles I've visited in the country!💂🏻♀️🗺️
A diferencia de Terena, tiene una planta cuadrada rodeada por un foso que me pareció brutal porque no había visto algo así. ¡Nunca había visitado un castillo donde se conservara el foso que lo rodea y donde se deba cruzar un puente levadizo para entrar! Este sí conserva la calzada, muy preservada y limpia. ¡De los mejores castillos que he visitado en el país🚩🌏

🚩 In my experience as a "castle evaluator" (hehe), I give Terena 3/5 stars, and Vila Vicoça 5/5 stars.
🚩 There is a great historical difference between the two, as Terena served more as a defensive fortress, while Vicoça was a space for the wealthy feudal people.
🚩 Terena has an incredible panoramic view of the Alentejo olive groves, while Vicoça is more urban.
