And with this post, my trip to Angra on Terceira Island in the Portuguese archipelago comes to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the island, and I'm answering the typical questions every tourist asks... Would I go back? NO! Was the experience bad? NOT AT ALL... The island is so small that you end up seeing and exploring everything in four days, so going back would mean repeating experiences that, personally, are meant to be lived only once in a lifetime!📍🚩
Y con este post termina mi paseo por la isla de Terceira en el archipiélago de las Azores. Disfruté al máximo mi estadía en la isla, y respondo a las preguntas típicas de todo turista... ¿Volvería? ¡NO! ¿Por qué? ¿La experiencia fue mala? ¡PARA NADA! La isla es tan pequeña que acabas por verlo y explorarlo todo en cuatro días. Por eso, volver sería repetir experiencias que, en lo personal, ¡son para vivirlas una vez en la vida!🏔️🌏
Lava pools?🧭🌋 / Piscinas de lavas?🚩📍
One of the experiences I will never forget in Terceira Island is discovering the "Piscinas Naturais dos Biscoitos" (Natural Pools of Biscoitos). We are used to seeing thermal waters or things of that kind, but pools formed by ocean currents in hardened lava? Is this for real?...🚩📍
Una de las experiencias que nunca olvidaré de mi viaje a la isla de Terceira es descubrir las «Piscinas Naturais dos Biscoitos». Estamos acostumbrados a ver aguas termales o cosas de ese tipo**, ¿pero** piscinas que se forman con la corriente del océano en lava endurecida? ¿Es en serio?...🌋🏞️
The pools are large and can accommodate many people. There is obviously some human intervention with the rocks, but these formations have been shaping for thousands of years—4,100 years, to be exact. Parking is public and free. I recommend visiting during the summer when the sun is pleasant, although I have to admit that everything is more expensive then, including car rentals. It all depends on your budget, haha! In the video I made of this area, which is located in the north of the island, you can see that snorkeling is excellent because of the seaweed and small fish.📍🚩
Las piscinas son grandes, caben muchas personas, obviamente hay alguna manipulacion en las rocas, pero esto tiene miles de anos en formacion, tienen exactamente 4100 anos, el estacionamiento es publico, no hay que pagar, te recomiendo venir en la epoca de verano que el sol es agradable, aunque tengo que admitir que en verano todo es mas costoso, inclusive alquilar un vehiculo. Todo dependera de tu cartera jaja; en el video que hice en esta zona, que esta comprendida por el norte de la isla, me parecio excelente hacer snorkel porque hay algas y pesces pequenos🌏🏔️

I remember we came prepared to go into the pools, haha! But when we saw the waves, it looked too dangerous. Of course, the pools consist of several sections made of volcanic rocks, so going into the one called "Belo Abismo" was the most viable option because you can swim there away from the rocks. But when we saw the waves caused by the storm, we decided not to risk it!🌋🏞️
Recuerdo que veníamos preparados para meternos en las piscinas, ¡jaja! Pero al ver el oleaje, era muy peligroso. Por supuesto, las piscinas constan de varias secciones hechas de rocas volcánicas; por eso, entrar en la que llaman «Belo Abismo» era la opción más viable, porque nadas allí y estás lejos de las piedras. Sin embargo, al ver el oleaje producto de la tempestad, ¡decidimos no arriesgarnos!🤯🚙

Wine grown in lava?🧭🌋 / Vino cultivado en lava?🚩📍
Cuando visité la isla, había leído que tenían una producción de vino en una zona específica (exactamente en el norte de la isla, en Biscoitos). Por eso, decidimos hacer una experiencia para catar vinos «volcánicos». ¿Cómo es eso de vinos volcánicos? Bueno... si lo cultivan entre rocas volcánicas, ¿cómo lo llamamos? ¡Jeje!🤯🏔️
When I visited the island, I had read that they had a wine production area in a specific region—exactly in the north of the island (in Biscoitos). So, we decided to book a "volcanic" wine-tasting experience. What do you mean by volcanic wines? Well... if they grow the grapes among volcanic rocks, what else do we call them? Haha!🍷📍
Today, we visited a place called "Museu do Vinho dos Biscoitos," a famous wine producer on the island. We had a guided tour where they explained the entire winemaking process and grape cultivation. The first thing you notice is that the vines are surrounded by black stones. Guess the origin of the stones? Yes... volcanic! They use them to maintain a constant temperature throughout the night when the island's temperature drops sharply. This is especially important for red wine, whose process is more delicate. However, the manager told us that the true specialty of the island is white wine. Since the Atlantic breeze can be very harmful to the vines, the stones also act as a shield. Finally, the climate is so extreme on the island that the harvest window is very short; therefore, low production equals a very premium, expensive wine.🍷📍
Y hoy visitamos un lugar llamado «Museu do Vinho dos Biscoitos», que es una bodega de vinos muy famosa en la isla. Tuvimos una experiencia con ellos donde se nos explicó todo el proceso de elaboración y el cultivo de la vid. Lo primero que notabas era que las plantas están rodeadas de piedras negras. ¿Adivina qué origen tiene la piedra? Sí... volcánico. Las utilizan para mantener la temperatura constante toda la noche cuando la temperatura en la isla cae abruptamente**. Esto** lo hacen con el vino tinto, cuyo proceso es más delicado**. Sin embargo,** la especialidad en la isla —nos comentaba el encargado— son los vinos blancos**. Como** la brisa del Atlántico es muy perjudicial para el vino, las piedras también los protegen. Por último, cabe agregar que el clima es tan extremo en la isla que la producción ocurre en periodos muy cortos. Por ello: ¡poca producción equivale a un vino muy costoso!🌏🌋
