Greetings fellow travelers! We continue adding castles to our list towards our ultimate goal: "to visit all the castles in Portugal." Currently, according to my research, I'm the person in Portugal with the most castle records, and some people have even suggested I write to the local tourism board to see if they can support me with a book or an interview. But I feel I'm not ready yet and must continue documenting more castles!🌏🚩
Saludos amigos viajeros, seguimos sumando castillos para nuestro objetivo final, "conocer todos los castillos de Portugal" actualmente segun estuve investigando soy la primera persona en Portugal con mas registros de castillos, y en realidad algunas personas ya me comentaron que escribiera al organismo local de turismo para ver si de alguna forma me apoyan con un libro o una entrevista, pero siento que aun no estoy preparado y debo continuar registrando mas castillos!🏰🗺️
First castle🌍🚙/ Primer castillo📍🧭
I made a route on Google Maps to visit the castles I had in mind. I'll start with Alcobaça because it's the closest to my location. I want to make it clear that today's castles are ruins, so we won't see a tower and walls as we usually do. To visit them, you must use a rental car if you're coming to Portugal on vacation.🌏
hice una ruta en Gmaps para ir visitando los castillos que tenia en mente, comenzare con el de Alcobaça porque es el mas cerca de mi localidad, quiero dejar en claro que los castillos de hoy son ruinas, por tanto no veremos una torre y murallas como lo estamos habitualmente, para visitarlos debes hacerlo con vehiculo alquilado si vienes de vacaciones a Portugal.🏰
Alcobaça Castle🌍🚙/ Castillo de Alcobaça📍🧭
Alcobaça is famous for a monastery built in the 12th century, during the time of the famous Reconquista, and when the castle was at its peak. It is located quite close to Nazaré and Batalhas, both cities with many interesting things to visit, including the world's biggest waves in January and the famous site of the Battle of Aljubarrota.🚩🌏
Alcobaça es famosa por un monasterio construido en el siglo XII, epoca de las famosas reconquistas, y cuando el castillo tuvo su mayor auge, esta localizada en un sitio bastante proximo de Nazare y de Batalhas, ambas ciudades con muchas cosas interesantes para visitar, incluyendo las olas mas grandes del mundo en enero y el famoso local de donde se libro la batalla de Aljubarrota,👨🏻🏫👨🏻🏫

Here is a list of things we can do in the city and surrounding areas. There are trains or buses that take us here from Lisbon and they aren't expensive, but the second castle is more complicated because it's in Porto.🚩🏰

History of the Castle🌍🚙/ Historia del Castillo📍🧭
Alcobaça Castle is an ancient fortification built in the 12th century. The order to build the castle came from Henry the Conqueror, when Portugal was fighting the Moors throughout the territory. It was built on hills to the northwest and has a privileged view of the monastery and the town.🏰👨🏻🏫
El castillo de Alcobaça es una antigua fortificacion que fue construida en el periodo del siglo XII, la orden para levantar el castillo fue de Henrique el conquistador, cuando Portugal libraba combates por todo el territorio con los Moros, fue construido en unas colinas al noroeste y tiene una privilegiada vista hacia el monasterio y la ciudad🌏🌳
The exact date of construction is 1147, after the lands were conquered from the Arabs. It later suffered damage in the 1755 earthquake and was eventually abandoned. It's quite shocking to read that the castle was dismantled in the 19th century so its stones could be stolen and used in the houses of people in the surrounding area—it's crazy! And the fact that the city council never attempted to rebuild it is a real shame.👨🏻🏫🏰
La fecha exacta de construccion es en 1147 luego de conquistar las tierras a los arabes, posteriormente sufrio con el terremoto de 1755 y al final acabo por abandonarse, es un poco chocante tener que leer que el castillo en el siglo XIX fue desmantelado para robar las piedras e utilizarlas en las casas de las personas que estaban a los alrededores es una cosa loca... Y que la camara municipal mas nunca intento reconstruirlo nos da una pena🗺️🏔️
From the hill we have a beautiful view of the protected park "Serra dos Candeeiros", be careful with the climb to the castle because the stairs are quite steep and with rain it is too dangerous, in 1978 the site was declared as a property of public interest, I recommend visiting the: "Monastery of Alcobaça" which is quite close to the site.🏰👨🏻🏫
Desde la colina tenemos una hermosa vista al parque protegido "Serra dos Candeeiros", ten cuidado con la subida al castillo porque es bastante empinada las escaleras y con lluvias es demasiado peligroso, en 1978 el local fue declarado como inmueble de interes publico, te recomiendo visitar el: "Monasterio de Alcobaça" que esta bastante cerca del sitio.🌏🚩
Aguiar do Sousa Castle🌍🚙/ Castillo de Aguiar do Sousa📍🧭
This is arguably the most destroyed castle I've visited on all my travels, with barely a simple tower remaining, but it's worth the visit for the surrounding landscapes and the river. It's strictly a visit by vehicle and isolated in a village (castelo) in the north of the country.👨🏻🏫🏰
Este se podria decir que es el castillo mas destruido que ya visite en todos mis viajes, apensas quedando una simple torre, pero merece la pena la visita por los paisajes de alrededor y el rio, estrictamente un visita en vehiculo y aislado en una aldea (castelo) al norte del pais🏔️🗺️,

History of the castle🌍🚙/ Historia del castillo📍🧭
What we see now is basically a tower that survived from the 12th century in the famous era of the reconquests. It is believed that before the walls were built there was Romanesque evidence in the area. It is one of the castles we have already visited with the most difficult access because it was surrounded by mountains and vegetation making it impossible to detect by the enemy. In the year 995 it was attacked by a Moorish leader, but the following century it was reconquered and remained so until the 13th century.🌍📍
lo que vemos ahora es basicamente una torre que sobrevivio del siglo XII en la famosa era de las reconquistas, se cree que antes de construirse las murallas habian evidencias romanicas en la zona, es uno de los castillos que ya visitamos con acceso mas dificil y es que estaba rodeado de montanas y vegetacion imposibilitando ser detectado por el enemigo, en el ano 995 fue atacado por un lider moro, pero el siglo a seguir fue reconquistado y siguio asi hasta el siglo XIII.🗺️🚩
