Good morning, a big hug to my fellow travelers! Today we added another castle to my collection; it's number 49, and I'm almost certain that I'm officially the person who has visited the most castles in Portugal. I just need to officially register this record with the Portuguese tourism website, but first I want to continue visiting more. For this odyssey, we had to travel hundreds of kilometers to the Braga district, to the village called Arnoia, which is also the name of the castle. This beautiful fortified structure is also known as "Castelo dos Moros" (Castle of the Moors). Don't miss my post to learn more.🌻🌏

The castle is also known as "moreira," so if you see this sign, don't worry. I'm telling you now that this area has no public transport, and I admit it's one of the most isolated villages I've been to in Portugal. Therefore, you can only access it with a rental car if you're on holiday in northern Portugal. After parking the vehicle in the village, you'll have to walk a kilometer along a path.🧭🗺️

Path to the castle🌍🚙/ Sendero al castillo📍🧭

We're in the village and we can see the castle in the distance. This is one of the tallest I've visited in Portugal, standing at over 576 meters, and one of its main attractions is the breathtaking panoramic view from up there! By the way, you have to be prepared because the path is quite steep and I don't recommend it for people with disabilities.🏰🗺️

History of the Castle🏰🗺️ / Historia del Castillo🌄🧭

The castle stands on a hill with a strategic view of the surrounding villages. In 1946, the castle was classified as a national monument. There are no official records of when the first civilization appeared in the Arnoia area, but there is a theory that, since the Romans occupied the nearby regions, it also makes sense that they first settled in the area of the castle. However, without archaeological evidence, it is difficult to prove!🗺️🏰

The most interesting facts about the castle are its construction dating back to the 10th to 11th century, possibly to safeguard the monastery. There are many strange stories about the castle, but no particular war is recounted, so let's just say that this castle "didn't see much action in its day."🏰🗺️🧭

The castle required some construction on the terrain to hinder access to future invasions, and in turn, the base where it was built also required a great deal of architectural ingenuity due to the irregularity of the terrain. The wall is quite small and peculiar due to its construction in granite and a reinforcement with a bastion. The gate is located to the south and has an access staircase. This area was well protected to safeguard the keep.🧭🗺️

The castle has three floors inside, including a basement. All of them had beds in the past, and it is assumed that royalty or feudal lords lived here. This is what differentiates Arnoia Castle from a simple fortress. In the middle of the courtyard is the well where water was collected for the garrison. It was usually filled with rainwater, or sometimes it had groundwater, but this possibility was less common🏰🗺️.
