Logistics and First Impressions

Admission costs 200 THB (about 5.50 euros, depending on the exchange rate), which is a bargain considering how spectacular this place is. Getting there is extremely easy: you simply have to cross the Chao Phraya River on a boat that costs around 45 THB. As a geographer, I’m fascinated by how the river shapes life in this city; crossing it is the perfect prelude to the energy that awaits you on the other side.

The Abundance of Sharing

I was lucky enough to visit on December 31, 2025—a date that holds no particular significance in Buddhism, but because it’s a time of great spiritual energy for many of the tourists visiting Wat Arun, the temple decided to host a free meal. It consisted of rice, soup, and sausages, along with various desserts. There weren’t too many—just two sweet treats whose names I don’t know and some fruit. But, let’s face it, it was a tremendous abundance, free and open to people of all religions.

I couldn’t help but view it from a geographical perspective and see this event as an example of community health and food sovereignty. It was beautiful to see the lines of people and then everyone sitting together, sharing. Being there for that moment made me feel fulfilled, happy, and full of energy. It’s proof that food, when offered with purpose, heals much more than just physical hunger.

La abundancia del compartir

Tuve la suerte de ir el 31 de diciembre de 2025, una fecha que para el Budismo no tiene fuerza en sí, pero debido a que es un momento con alta carga energética para muchos de los turistas que visitan Wat Arun, desde el templo se decidió hacer una comida gratuita. Consistía en platos de arroz, sopa y salchichas, con diferentes postres. No eran demasiados, sino dos cosas dulces cuyos nombres no sé y algo de fruta. Pero, vamos, que era una abundancia tremenda, gratuita y abierta a todas las personas de todas las religiones.

No pude evitar darle cierto enfoque geográfico y observar este acto como un ejemplo de salud comunitaria y soberanía alimentaria. Fue hermoso ver las filas de gente y luego a las personas sentadas compartiendo. Estar allí para este momento me hizo sentir plena, feliz, repleta de energía. Es la prueba de que el alimento, cuando se ofrece con propósito, sana mucho más que el hambre física.

The Temple of Dawn (and its shadows)

As for the temple, not only is it immense, but it also features details of all sizes scattered throughout its structure. Although the translation is “The Temple of the Dawn,” it looks beautiful both at that time of day and at sunset, when the setting sun begins to play with the different structures, as you can see in the photos. The pieces of Chinese porcelain embedded in the towers create a map of reflections that change depending on your location.

Something that really caught my attention—and that I didn’t particularly like—was that there were quite a few people staging full-on photo shoots in a way that struck me as disrespectful. In fact, there were quite a few signs in the temple stating that Buddha is not for decorations, tattoos, or fashion photos. These weren’t your typical tourists taking pictures, but rather people who were extremely dressed up, wearing makeup, stunning outfits, and even carrying umbrellas—and they were also obstructing the free flow of traffic in the temple. I wondered how much of the original spirituality is sacrificed today on the altar of social media.

El Templo del Amanecer (y sus sombras)

Con respecto al templo, no solamente es inmenso, sino que tiene detalles de todos los tamaños distribuidos en su estructura. Aunque la traducción es “El Templo del Amanecer”, se ve precioso tanto a esa hora del día como en el atardecer, donde la luz del sol poniéndose empieza a jugar con las diferentes estructuras, como se puede ver en las fotos. Las piezas de porcelana china incrustadas en las torres crean un mapa de reflejos que cambian según tu ubicación.

Algo que me llamó mucho la atención y que no me gustó demasiado es que había bastantes personas haciéndose auténticas sesiones de fotos de una manera que me llegó a parecer irrespetuosa. De hecho, en el templo había bastante cartelería indicando que Buda no es para adornos, tatuajes ni fotos de moda. No era lo normal de cualquier turista que hace tomas, sino personas sumamente producidas, maquilladas, con vestidos despampanantes y hasta paraguas, que además afectaban la libre circulación del templo. Me pregunté cuánto de la espiritualidad original se sacrifica hoy en el altar de las redes sociales.

Other than that, the experience was wonderful. Wat Arun is not just an architectural landmark; it is a testament to how humans strive to touch the heavens through art and faith. This is a highly recommended visit that should always be on the list of anyone planning a trip to Bangkok.
It is a place to observe, to breathe, and, above all, to remember that the most important maps are drawn with your feet and an open heart.

Fuera de esto, la experiencia fue hermosa. Wat Arun no es solo un hito arquitectónico; es un testimonio de cómo el ser humano intenta tocar el cielo a través del arte y la fe. Esta es una visita más que recomendada, que debería estar siempre presente en las listas de quienes van a visitar Bangkok.
