When majesty is so awe-inspiring that even the centuries cannot forget it: Amber Fort, India

Amber Fort, India… and I would say it is one of the greatest symbols of this country and of the Triangle to which its color alludes: the Golden Triangle.

Located in Jaipur, the city that forms this imaginary geometric figure, Amber Fort invites you to explore and experience it “by any means necessary.” In my case, the day was cloudy and rainy, and although I was prepared not to see it due to the bad weather and my extreme exhaustion—which was already making itself felt strongly in February—I was lucky that the owner of the hotel where I was staying reminded me of how beautiful this fort was, and not only that, she offered me a way to get there quickly and safely: her friend, who owned a tuk-tuk.

For about 1,000 rupees (around €10), I was able to visit this iconic site of India, which dazzled me from the moment I spotted it in the distance.

Cuando lo majestuoso es tan imponente que ni los siglos lo olvidan: Ámber Fort, India

Amber Fort, India… y diría yo que uno de los mayors exponentes de este país y del Triángulo al que su color hace alusión: el Triángulo Dorado.

Ubicado en Jaipur, la ciudad que conforma esta figura geométrica imaginaria, Ámber Fort invita a transitarlo y habitarlo “a como dé lugar”. En mi caso el día estuvo nublado y lluvioso, y aunque estaba preparada para no verlo debido al mal tiempo y a mi extremo cansancio, que ya en febrero se sentía con fuerza, tuve la suerte de que la dueña del hotel en el que estaba me recordara lo bello que era este fuerte, y no solo eso, me ofreció una opción para ir de manera rápida y segura: su amigo y dueño de un tuktuk.

Por unas 1000 rupias (cerca de €10), pude visitar este exponente de India, que me deslumbró desde que lo avisté a la distancia.

Amber Fort offers both a free tour and a paid tour. You can actually enter the fort for free, walk around, and take in much of its beauty—including the gardens and the views from there—but there’s another section that’s closed off and accessible only with a ticket. I stuck to the first part and enjoyed it immensely.

Ámber Fort ofrece una visita gratuita y otra de pago. En verdad puedes ingresar al fuerte libremente, subirlo y contemplar mucha de su belleza, incluso los jardines y las vistas desde allí, pero hay otro sector que está cerrado y al que se puede acceder únicamente con entrada. Yo me quedé con la primera parte y lo disfruté muchísimo.

A few things to keep in mind if you plan to go:

• There are a lot of people asking for money, selling things, or approaching you for one reason or another. If you’re not very patient, it’s best to ignore this part

• You’ll see that they offer elephant rides at the Fort, so be careful for two reasons: 1, it’s a bit dangerous to get on the elephant, since the saddle has to be very securely fastened—they’re huge animals, and a fall from up there could be very harmful. 2, personally, I believe this is animal exploitation and should be banned.

• You’ll notice that the elephants are painted. Many say it’s harmless, eco-friendly paint made from cornstarch, while others claim it’s chemicals that burn the animal’s skin. I took some photos of this with great respect. Although we might think the makeup looks pretty, these are animals—living, pure nature—being used for human entertainment, so my photos aim to show what I consider an aberration.

• Many men will offer to take photos of you. Some have their own cameras, and it’s clear that this is a paid service; others suggest using your phone. This isn’t always a favor—they often want to charge you for it.

• Personally, I didn’t feel the place was unsafe, but I was repeatedly told to watch my belongings, so I’m passing that message on to you.

Algunas consideraciones a apuntar en caso de que quieras ir:

Hay muchísima gente pidiendo dinero, vendiendo algo, o acercándose por algún que otro motivo. Si vas con poca paciencia, es mejor ignorar esta parte.

Verás que se hacen en el Fuerte, paseos con elefantes, pues atención por dos motivos: 1, es un poco peligroso subirse al elefante, ya que la silla tiene que estar muy bien amarrada, son animales enormes y una caída desde allí, podría ser muy dañina. 2, personalmente creo que esto es explotación animal y debería estar prohibido.

Verás que los elefantes van pintados. Muchos dicen que es una pintura ecológica inofensiva hecha con harina de maíz, y muchos otros dicen que son químicos que queman la piel del animal. Hice algunas fotos de esto con mucho respeto. Aunque podríamos pensar que el maquillaje es bonito, estos son animales, es naturaleza viva y pura, puesta al servicio de entretenimiento de los humanos, por lo que mis fotos tienen como objetivo mostrar esto que para mí es una aberración.

Muchos hombres te ofrecerán tomarte fotos. Algunos tienen su cámara y se hace evidente que es un servicio de pago, otros sugieren hacerlo con tu teléfono. Esto no es siempre un favor, muchas veces quieren cobrar por este gesto.

Personalmente no sentí que el sitio fuese inseguro, pero repetidas veces me dijeron que cuidara mis pertenencias, por lo que replico el mensaje hacia ustedes.

It’s also important to keep in mind that if you have more time and visit on a day with better weather, exploring every corner of this place could be an extraordinary experience. In fact, I was only there for a very short time, but even so, I was blown away by its beauty.

Además es fundamental tener en cuenta que si se va con más tiempo y en un día más amable meteorológicamente hablando, recorrer cada esquina de este lugar, podría ofrecer una experiencia extraordinaria. De hecho yo fui por un rato muy corto realmente y así y todo me quedé impresionada con esta belleza.

Although you can get there by bus, I recommend taking a private tuk-tuk, since it’s not expensive and Jaipur—especially the city center, where the Pink City itself is located—is very chaotic, and you might want, like me, to escape the noise and chaos for a bit. But it depends on when you arrive there; visiting Jaipur as the first or second city on your trip isn’t the same as doing so toward the end of it.

Aunque puedes llegar en bus, recomiendo tomar un tuktuk privado, pues el precio no es costoso y Jaipur, en especial la zona del núcleo urbano, donde está propiamente la Pink City, es muy caótica, y quizás desees, como yo, alivianar un poco la sensación de ruido y desorden. Pero es depende en qué momento llegues allí, no es lo mismo pisar Jaipur como primera o segunda ciudad en tu viaje, que hacerlo hacia el final del mismo.

In the photos, you can see the ochre or dull golden color of this fort, which stands out despite the fact that it was a very cloudy day in the city. You can also see the impeccable and intricate details of each structure, which make you think about the time and dedication that went into it, since we’re talking about a 16th-century structure in India—so we can imagine that the level of technological development wasn’t optimal, and yet this fort is a masterpiece of design.

En las fotos pueden apreciar el color ocre o dorado opaco de este fuerte, que destaca a pesar de tratarse de un día muy nublado en la ciudad. También pueden ver los impecables y múltiples detalles de cada construcción, que te conducen a pensar en el tiempo y la dedicación que hay allí, pues estamos hablando de una creación del siglo XVI en India, por lo que podemos imaginar que el nivel de desarrollo tecnológico no era óptimo, y sin embargo este fuerte es un lujo del diseño.

Some thoughts after this trip

I have to say that if you want to go to India, you should definitely… JUST DO IT! Now that I’m feeling a little more settled after a month of being on somewhat familiar ground in the country I’ve chosen as my second home for now, I have to say that I look back on those days I spent in India and treasure them in my heart and mind.

It’s a transformative journey that teaches so much about life. It teaches so much on a subtle, almost secret level that there isn’t time to process it while you’re there.

So I dare say that India is like therapy, whose benefits begin to show weeks after you’ve started the treatment.

Algunas ideas después de este viaje

Debo decir que si desean ir a India, es mucho mejor que… LO HAGAN! Ahora que estoy un poco más tranquila después de un mes de haber pisado suelo, de alguna manera conocido, en el país que de momento he elegido como mi segundo hogar, debo decir que miro a esos días que pasé en India y los atesoro en mi alma y en mi mente.

Es un viaje transformador, que enseña demasiado de la vida. Es tanto lo que enseña a nivel sutil, de manera secreta, que no hay tiempo mientras se está ahí, de procesarlo.

Por lo que me atrevo a decir que India es como una terapia, cuyos beneficios se empiezan a ver semanas después de haber iniciado el tratamiento.
