A Day Among the Ancient Stones of Sagalassos

EN

Hello everyone,

Today, I want to share with you the Ancient City of Sagalassos, which has been one of the places that has impressed me the most. I even posted a video about this beautiful ancient city on my YouTube channel and I leave it here for those who want to watch it. (I would also be very happy if you subscribe to my channel and support 🥰)

Located about 1.5 hours from Antalya, Sagalassos is one of our unique historical treasures. As we made our way toward Sagalassos, we climbed high into the mountains. In fact, I could even say that we were above the clouds. You can reach Sagalassos by passing through the district of Ağlasun on the Burdur road.

😊 During our journey to Sagalassos, the weather was cold but sunny. Honestly, exploring a historical site in this kind of weather was a special pleasure for me. Sometimes visiting such places in extremely hot weather can be quite exhausting.

The first thing that impressed me when I stepped into the ancient city was its location. Situated high among the mountains, the view from this city was truly breathtaking. It amazes me that thousands of years ago people were able to build such magnificent structures in such a challenging geography.

One of the places that impressed me the most was the famous Antonine Fountain. According to our guide, no water had flowed from this fountain for many years. However, thanks to restoration work, water now flows from it once again. I stood in front of the fountain for several minutes simply watching the water flow. On both sides of the upper section of the fountain were Medusa sculptures with snake-like hair. I often notice Medusa figures in many historical structures I visit.

I joined the tour with a guide. Our guide shared many interesting facts about the history of Sagalassos. We stopped at different points throughout the ancient city and listened to various stories. Thanks to this, I not only saw the stone structures but also had the opportunity to learn about their connection to life in the past.

Another area that caught my attention during the trip was the rock tombs. I can honestly say that among all the ancient cities I have visited, the most interesting rock tombs I have seen were here. To reach them, I had to climb a very high staircase. I can say that I struggled quite a bit while climbing and was even out of breath by the time I reached the top. It was a very steep wooden staircase. However, I must admit that reaching the top and seeing those tombs up close was absolutely worth it. Since I was at a higher point, I also could not get enough of the incredible view. Whenever I visit beautiful historical places like this, I find myself wondering how people lived, what they ate, and how they made a living. I don’t know if you feel the same way, but places like this always make me think about how people lived in the past.

According to our guide, these rock tombs were built for important people of that era. In other words, prominent individuals of the time were buried in these tombs, which were often constructed in elevated locations. Thinking about what our guide said, I couldn’t help but wonder whether these tombs were built in such high places so that the deceased could enjoy these beautiful views. 😂 Have you ever thought the same thing? 😂

When you look at the ancient city from the area where the rock tombs are located, you can truly feel the grandeur of Sagalassos among the mountains. This was one of the most impressive spots of the entire trip for me.

Throughout my time in Sagalassos, I felt as if I was experiencing much more than simply visiting an ancient city. History, nature, and human effort seem to blend together perfectly here. The silence, the mountain air, and the historical atmosphere combine to create an unforgettable experience.

If your travels ever bring you to Antalya, I highly recommend visiting Sagalassos. For me, this trip was much more than seeing a historical site; it felt like taking a short journey between the past and the present. Whenever I visit historical places, I always feel as if I am traveling back in time.

Hahahhhaa, I have to admit that scenic tombs have always given me the feeling that they were placed in such locations so the deceased could enjoy these beautiful views forever. 😊 It’s a thought that sometimes makes me smile as well.

But honestly, knowing that my words made you smile is even better. Thank you very much for your lovely comment and for taking the time to read my post!

In here, they built also a castle made of stone wherein it's one of the tourist attractions in Baguio city - it's the Igorot Kingdom stone.
I also wondered how they built that since it's from the top. The view from the top must be breathtaking.

It seems I’m not the only one who has these thoughts while exploring historical places. 😊 That’s one of the things I enjoy most about visiting ancient sites—they make us wonder about the people who once lived there and how they built such incredible structures.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post and share your thoughts!
