Exploring the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, a Religious Tourism Destination in the Veranda of Mecca, Aceh, Indonesia. (part 2)

Still focusing on the religious tourism destination located in the center of the provincial capital of Aceh, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque.
In this blog, I again want to invite you to see the mosque up close through the images I share. Later, I will also write a short article about the mosque. So, keep following my blog to see the Acehnese religious tourism destination, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque.

After exploring the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque Garden, which I shared in a previous blog, my friends and I entered the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. The main gate to the mosque's interior was meticulously designed, and what caught my attention was its striking white architecture.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque has a long history and was a silent witness to the tsunami that struck Aceh in late 2004, as I mentioned in a previous blog. After undergoing several significant renovations, the mosque underwent another major renovation in 2015, when then-Governor Zaini Abdullah initiated a landscaping project, costing 458 billion rupiah.

After passing through the gate to enter the mosque area, I immediately saw the grandeur of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, standing quite majestically with its extraordinary architecture, dominated by white with a black dome.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Aceh, with a capacity of 24,000 worshippers, both indoors and outdoors.

I started to explore the area inside the mosque and the first thing I saw was the many photographers who were ready to capture the moments of visitors in the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque area.

It's the weekend, and the mosque courtyard is filled with visitors praying, resting under umbrellas, or simply enjoying the peaceful religious atmosphere.
That's what I saw as I explored the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. There were so many visitors, whether they were praying, resting, or simply enjoying the peaceful religious atmosphere within the mosque.

And honestly, I felt a sense of serenity in this mosque, which has witnessed major events such as colonialism during World War II, armed conflict, and the tsunami.

In the past, this mosque looked very simple, but over time this building has undergone various stages of restoration and development, including the installation of giant umbrellas that resemble the design of the Nabawi Mosque in Medina. Also now the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is not only used as a place of worship for Muslims, this mosque has also become a cultural and historical tourist attraction that is increasingly popular with tourists both from within the country and abroad.

The big holiday moment of Eid al-Fitr is one of the most lively and big moments in the Aceh region, so that there are many decorations that commemorate this moment which are still left in the mosque area until now and this is one of them.

In the center of the mosque is a garden with a pond filled with ornamental fish, further enhancing the beauty of the mosque.

I must say that the beauty and grandeur of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque received international recognition at the end of 2016. It was named the World's Best Halal Cultural Destination by the World Halal Tourism Awards in Abu Dhabi, and this is a source of pride for the people of Aceh.

The long historical legacy and the Acehnese people's spirit of struggle to maintain the mosque's existence have made the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque not just a place of worship but also a valuable symbol of Aceh's steadfastness and cultural identity. This mosque has become a magnet for anyone who wants to experience the historical traces and enjoy the splendor of Islamic cultural heritage in the westernmost part of Indonesia.
