Holy Week has arrived, and usually when this Catholic tradition rolls around, people in Cumaná tend to head to the beach, while others go to church and still others go wild drinking alcohol while partying—“they go to parties.” We eat fish because it’s forbidden to eat meat during Holy Week. Cumaná has been without water for a month now, yet they’ve held empanada fairs, forgetting all about the water crisis, and instead of banning it, the governors allow it and even bring in water tankers just to make it happen.
I sinned by going to the beach without running water or a shower, because a reservoir that supplies water to the entire Sucre State broke down. I just couldn’t say no to a friend from Guárico who has never been to a beach and doesn’t know how to swim. We taught him to swim, we laughed because he swallowed water, and we swam at a beach 10 minutes from Cumaná called Quetepe Beach. It’s a clean, crystal-clear beach with little fish. Obviously, I was wondering how I was going to get water from the beach, but even so, I had a good time while I write this at home. I haven’t gone out since.
No he salido más.

The beach is right there—for just 200 bolivars for the fare and four loaves of bread, you can chill out at a great beach. I went with friends and acquaintances, including a friend from Guárico, where it’s all flatlands. There were cachapas, grilled meat, and plenty of music. There are no beaches.
No existe playas.

I have a lot of friends abroad who long to be near the beach, who miss swimming and getting a taste of the salt water. We also had a stew with shrimp, octopus, and I can't remember what else. That's a typical dish here in Sucre. I'll tell you more about it later.

That was it—my trip to Quetepe Beach a few days before Holy Week. Thanks to a friend from Guarico who wanted to visit Cumaná. I hope you enjoyed it. See you soon!
