Hello everyone! First of all, I wish you all a very happy new year, and I hope all your projects come to fruition. đ
To end 2025 on a high note, @genesisledger and I decided to treat ourselves to a 3-day getaway. It had been a few years since we'd had a weekend or vacation just the two of us, and we were really starting to miss it.
Anyway, we had several destination ideas: the volcanoes of Auvergne (which we've already visited several times), Limoges, the Loire Valley castles, or even Lyon.
In the end, we decided we wanted to explore Lyon, because we knew it was a city we could really enjoy! And above all, it wasn't far from where we celebrated Christmas.
So, on Friday, December 26th, we hit the road, heading to our hotel, located on the outskirts of Lyon in Chassieu. The hotel is nice, and above all, it has a wellness area with a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, and swimming pool.
We arrived around 6 p.m. after a 4-hour drive. We immediately looked for a restaurant for dinner because we were starting to get hungry. And we discovered a great restaurant just 5 minutes from our hotel: Sisi Restaurant.
With @genesisledger, we didn't know what to eat; there were so many dishes that looked delicious, so we used the "each of us takes a different dish and we cut it in half" technique.
A truffle pizza and a Savoyard burger:

In short, we had a wonderful meal and went to bed to be ready for the next day.
Saturday morning, after a delicious breakfast at the hotel buffet, we left the hotel to spend the day in Lyon and finally explore the city!
The city of Lyon has excellent public transport, so we were able to use it (to avoid paying for parking in the city center).
We started by wandering around the city:

We spotted the Basilica of Notre-Dame de FourviĂšre, which overlooks the city.

We crossed the bridge to reach the Vieux-Lyon (Old Lyon) district:

There's a street lined with restaurants and bouchons, which are incredibly welcoming restaurants serving simple, hearty dishes.

Then we went to the Saint-Jean Cathedral and its square. We visited it, and it's home to one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Europe:

Next, we decided to take the funicular up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de FourviĂšre (about âŹ2 for the ride). There's a fantastic view of the entire city of Lyon; it's quite lovely. Then, we visited the Basilica and the Crypt; there was a beautiful nativity scene there too.

We then went down the steps and crossed the bridge again to reach a restaurant we'd been wanting to try for a long time, a Lyon institution: Brasserie Georges. The setting is lovely, the atmosphere is warm, the waiters are entertaining, and the food is goodâvery traditional dishes. We ordered sauerkraut, rum baba, and nougat glacĂ©.

In short, after this delicious meal at 6:00 p.m., we walked through the streets to reach the metro and then back to the hotel, as we had booked a spa treatment to relax after our day of walking.

On Sunday morning, we enjoyed the breakfast buffet again and then took public transport back into Lyon to explore the rest of our trip. We took a long walk in the Parc de la TĂȘte d'Or, but the park is so large that we didn't see it all. I'll make a dedicated post for you, so I won't say more here đ€«
We then went back to the Old Lyon district to do some shopping: art galleries, local produce shops, flea marketsâŠ

And of course, we ate at a traditional Lyonnais restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely and the food was absolutely delicious. On the menu for us: homemade cheese burgers (Saint Marcellin and Reblochon):

With our bellies full, we continued walking through the streets, before heading back to the funicular.

We went to see the illuminations on the Basilica of Notre-Dame de FourviĂšre: a fifteen-minute show with projections and sound on the Basilica. It was beautiful and very well done!

Anyway, after that, it was time for us to go back to the hotel for a good night's sleep before hitting the road again the next morning, heading towards Normandy.
It was a wonderful trip, we loved Lyon, and it's definitely a place where we could see ourselves living in the future!
This little getaway for two was lovely, and we're ready for back to school and the new year! đ
Have you ever visited Lyon? What did you think?
See you soon,
Johanna

Johanna

Speaking of:
Would you and @genesisledger maybe interested in joining the upcoming 3rd @buzzparty event called Hive Open Days in Alicante, Spain? We already have 21 attendees from Hive and 3 from outside - it will be a lot of fun and even more fun if you both would join as well! Many European airlines fly to Alicante for reasonable prices, and many Airbnbs / hotels are still free from the 30.04 - 03.05 :) The event is only 20 HBD with a loooot of benefits!
Greetings!

Thank you for sharing this travel experience, exploring historic neighborhoods, local cuisine, urban atmosphere, and personal impressions. I've been to France but never been to Lyon. The attached photos are stunning and make me want to visit this city. This post is refreshing because it doesn't try to sell a destination, but rather to share its soul. !PIZZA

What a lovely place to explore and the food is enticing to eat.
Oh yes, I agree with you, it's a really dynamic city and a great place to visit. The food served in the typical restaurants is classic, delicious, and excellent!
