I would say they're both well worth it, although I've only been to Athens, as far as Greece is concerned. Many, many Italian trips though, and it's a shame not to go, if you ask me. Although I do understand your point about the plane! :\ would it be possible to break down the trip into sections? Obviously not the over the ocean part, but there can still be a good few hours, traveling from one place in Europe to another and the same, I expect, there.

also, it's definitely worth it if you come for longer - I.e. a few weeks. An American friend recently visited Europe (France, Ireland and UK, I think), just for a week, and it was quite grueling, apparently.
