🇬🇧 This walk took place about a year ago in the south of Chile, in Puerto Natales. Our motorcycle road trip had taken us to this southern port so we could board a ferry that would take us through the Patagonian channels to the southern end of the Carretera Austral. Puerto Natales, a small windswept town on the shore of the Última Esperanza fjord, is the gateway to one of the most spectacular places on the continent: Torres del Paine National Park. But reducing Natales to a simple base camp would be a mistake. The town has a unique atmosphere — a scent of the end of the world, a magical tranquility. On this Wednesday morning of the austral summer, I was up, as often, before everyone else. Not wanting to wake the others, I quietly grabbed my jacket and camera and set off for a walk.

🇬🇧 The light is typical of this southern Patagonian region—cold, almost unsettling, even threatening. Although it was January and therefore summer, the air was extremely crisp, and I had to walk faster to warm up a little. I wandered at random through the deserted streets until I reached the shoreline, which here forms the end of a fjord, the Fjord of the Last Hope. As often in the morning, the weather was calm; the wind would probably rise later, but for now the sea mirrored the sky like a natural reflection. Nature, like most of us, was waking up slowly. The light, so special, was inspiring, and despite my numb fingers I took out my camera to capture a few images — to try to keep a memory of this atmosphere.

🇬🇧 Located about 250 km north of Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales seems to float between snow-covered mountains, icy waters and vast, ever-changing skies. Here, the weather shifts with theatrical speed: strong winds, golden clearings, rainbows, bursts of snow… Patagonia is a land of wild elements. Puerto Natales is also a pleasant town to live in, with its cozy cafés, small restaurants where you can try cangrejo, Patagonian lamb, or local craft beer. Colorful houses, often clad in metal sheets, stand firm against the gusts of wind, and the walk along the fjord is a must: cormorants, black-necked swans, and sometimes even dolphins and sea lions put on a show.

🇬🇧 Puerto Natales also has that unmistakable “end of the world” feeling. It’s a place to rest before venturing into grandiose landscapes, a place where the adventure truly begins. For those planning to visit, I highly recommend taking the ferry either on the way in or on the way out — it’s an incredible way to discover an extremely remote region deep within the Patagonian channels.
