Caught in the Kavalkinaru breeze.

I always feels that getting an essence of the place you visit is as important as exploring the popular places. Rather than spending time in closed walls, I always like to navigate the unknown path of the new city. And when you are completelly unknown location it get must to have a proper sighting of the area to know where you are staying. In my recent trip to south, our base is in Kavalkinaru a small town of Tamilnadu. At first I find it hard to pronounce the name but slowly get habitual to it. There are many cities around, but being at a new place with a new name adds some interesting turns and ups and down to my trip.

Kavalkinaru is famous for its large concentration of wind power generation. The high tunneling effect of the nearby Western Ghats creates strong winds, making this region a major area for wind power generation in India with thousands of windmills. There were many wind mills spread all over the place. You can watch as long as possible but ypu will find big white of wind mills circling up in the air. There were hills, there were open spaces and diverse religious communities live closely together, alongside a high literacy rate and community prosperity. As I took a walk in the morning, I found an old bus stop and kids waiting for the bus. It was not a usual bus stand but something special making it unique.

The name "Kavalkinaru" literally translates to "Guard Well" in Tamil. According to local history, the village originated around a vital freshwater well that historically provided drinking water to the stationed soldiers and border guards of the ancient Chera, Chola, and Pandya kingdoms.

There are many temple around the city, but a small church right at the city main crossing is a major attraction. I find it really attractive. May be I never been to churches, but this one does calling me to get in. But seeing no people around I find it awkward to get inside.

Opposite to the churches is city major bakery and snack house. There are few shops that operates 24*7. I find them open even as early as 3.AM and also till late at night. The shops mostly temain crowded with many customers.

It is one of the major commercial hub of the city. Rest all around were a busy highway and wind mills on one side of the road. A common person is not allowed to get inside the wind mills area, but from a far away distance they look vary interesting.

It was my last day at Kavalkinaru, and I made sure to explore the city of my own. I went strolling the ares and discovered the scenic set up of the town. People were less talkative but very helpful. Kavalkinaru is uniquely situated right next to the lower slopes of the Mahendragiri mountain making it a best place to live. I stayed here for 7 days and each day were amazing.
