Let me recall my most recent experience walking through the city center of Madiun, East Java. Nowadays, I am mostly based in this city and only recently, I got the chance to fully explore its city center.

Madiun as a city is pedestrian friendly. It’s quite rare in Indonesia and I had a pleasant experience walking through the city. While this city doesn’t quite have an interesting neighborhood, it managed to transform its nook and crannies into something that can be visited. One of the most intriguing spots in the city is the 7 landmarks from all over the world with its tagline “ you don’t need a passport and visa to visit these 7 landmarks”.

Along its city park, they have some shopping malls on both sides. They are not necessarily the biggest but if you are looking to hide from the shade as well as just wanting to eat, they’re worth visiting. However, for actual shopping, there are other areas better than those two.
One of the things that compelled me to walk after finishing my consultation at the government office, was the Starbucks. I had to walk around 700 meters but because it was pedestrian friendly, I was fine with it.
I was acting like a tourist and just walked everyone because again, no locals around here would walk. They would probably take some form of Grab or something. Walking is just not something most people do around here especially in this heat.
Throughout the area, other than shops, there are plenty of benches around to sit and lounge around. So, it was such a pleasant walk to explore minus the heat.
Once I reached Starbucks, I was also looking for a lunch spot. There is one pork noodle nearby Starbucks that I wanted to try.
In the street to the pork noodle stalls, it looks pretty run down but still walkable. I was pretty skeptical at first but I found the banner and got to the place.
I was pretty surprised that in a city like Madiun, pork and alcohol are pretty accessible. Perhaps, because it is considered a big city now, so modern amenities and tertiary needs are there. There is also a sizable christian community which makes this place a pork friendly city.
Either way, I got the pork noodle for 20.000 with the shumai only for 8.000. It’s one of the cheapest pork noodles I’ve had in my entire life. Typically, pork dishes around cities I’ve been to cost more than 40.000 or 50.000. Pork noodles are a must-have in Madiun. I didn’t try most of the menu but this lapchiong is recommended. The shumai was also quite savory. If I were to rate this meal, that would be 3.5/5. It’s not the most delicious pork noodle I had but for a city like Madiun, it was good enough.
Once I had my lunch, I went back home to grab it and I plan on doing similar things if I needed to actually go around the government offices around the area. That was it, a snippet of my walk through the city center of Madiun.
It was a refreshing walk because once I am back home, so many chores, work, and materials prepping await. These days, I am growing my online courses business and they take up a lot of my time too.
