In the Cathedral of Havana [EN/ES]

cover.jpg

English Version

In Old Havana, in one of its four oldest squares, rises the Cathedral of Havana, which gives its name to the place, Plaza de la Catedral. This church is one of the most emblematic and well-known temples of Cuba. Although it is not the largest church in the country, it is one of the most recognized and visited, considered Cuban heritage and precisely because of its historical value, it is part of the group declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Cathedral is a must-visit place for those who wish to know the colonial history of the capital.

The Cathedral has a majestic design, with its columns that, seen from below, seem to want to reach the highest point. Its stone façade has been an inspiration for eminent Cuban visual artists who have captured its image for immortality. On both sides, its two bell towers guard the main entrance, rising with their bells toward the heights, carrying our gaze upward to contrast the sobriety of this church with the blue of the sky. Its exterior conveys solemnity, but it is upon passing through its doors that we discover this site is even more impressive.

Inside, what most caught my attention was its spaciousness and the serenity perceived throughout the space. The main nave has at its end the high altar, covered with carved wood and golden details. The columns end in arches from which luxurious ceiling lamps hang, illuminating almost the entire interior and adding beauty to the decoration of the ceilings. I was pleased to see the abundance of wood, in the benches, in the altarpieces, and in the decorations of the images of the saints, which makes the interior feel warm and welcoming.

The images of saints that adorn the Cathedral of Havana are among the largest and most ornate that I have been able to see in all the churches I have visited. Each statue is decorated with meticulous details that make us stop before them, contemplating the devotion they transmit, even if we are only simple visitors. All this makes in every corner one perceives that calm and relaxation so typical of temples, where sometimes time seems to stop and where everything conveys spirituality.

Walking through the interior of the Cathedral of Havana is not only to admire a religious building, it is to enter into a symbol of the city and of colonial architecture. It is a place that reminds us that greatness is not always in size, but in the eyes of those who contemplate it.
