A walk between chess and architecture [EN/ES]

cover.jpg

English Version

The well-known Old Square of Havana is an ancient space from the 16th century, a beautiful place with a simple marble fountain that adorns the center of the large square. It is surrounded by colonial buildings that intermingle with different architectural styles, creating a colorful and very picturesque environment.

Around it, most of the mansions and buildings are preserved as museum sites and public spaces where various cultural and recreational activities take place. On this walk, inside one of those buildings, I found something very peculiar that caught my attention and that today I want to share with you: a chess tournament that was held in different age categories, from children to adolescents. It was the first time I witnessed something like this, and I liked it doubly, both for the passion and discipline that the event conveyed and for the architecture of the colonial house where it was held.

Chess, that millenary game, can transform into an event that transcends the simple fact of competing. In this case, the mixture of the intellectual tradition of the game with the architectural and artistic heritage of the place created a fantastic setting that fused several centuries of history in the same space. On the first floor of the colonial house there were several tables arranged, each one with its board, showing the contrast between the white and black pieces that awaited the outcome of the battle.

From the interior patio full of ornamental plants, the daylight filtered in, illuminating the spaces naturally. All of this was surrounded by a design of columns and arches so characteristic of the houses of Old Havana that gave the place an ancient and welcoming air.

There were many young people accompanied by their relatives, all attentive and excited. I did not stay until the end, but even so I very much enjoyed witnessing the preliminaries of this tournament.

I hope you have enjoyed this encounter between culture, tradition, and modernity, through a chessboard.

Cheers, and until next time!
