A neighborhood Church [EN/ES]

cover.jpg

English Version

I have been wanting for some time to visit a place in my neighborhood, a church, built many years ago when this town was beginning to emerge, which is very close to where I live. This church is popularly known as the Church of Arroyo Arenas, the name it shares with the place where it was erected, and it is consecrated to Jesus.

For a long time I wanted to go inside, but every time I passed by I found it closed, which made me think that it was shut down, as has happened to so many others in Cuba due to lack of budget to repair them. I thought it would be another forgotten and abandoned village church. However, just a few days ago I went up again the steps that lead to its main entrance and I was very glad when I saw its doors open.

I had a special memory of this place, it was the first church I visited as a child. Although I do not practice the Catholic religion, I have always liked its temples. They do not need to be sumptuous, although many are, because from the moment one enters a different energy is perceived, a greatness that does not depend on material wealth. I have always felt churches as sacred places, where almost like a physical presence that aura of peace and divinity that surrounds them can be perceived. It is what I experience every time I cross the doors of one.

With that memory of my first visit and the sensation of serenity that I felt the first time, I went in again now many years later. It no longer seemed so majestic to me as in that time, for it is a village church, simple and modest, but it preserves intact the solemnity and the peace that I felt the first time. It was almost empty at that hour of the day, which allowed me to walk through it calmly and take some photos to keep as a memory.

What most draws attention is its altar, consecrated to Jesus of Nazareth. It is a simple altar, but not for that reason less imposing. The wooden benches, the stained glass of its windows, and the details of its simple architecture make this church a welcoming place.

I was very glad to have visited it and I wanted to take with me a small souvenir, so I bought a little medal of Saint Benedict. Upon leaving, while putting the medal in my bag, I thought that beyond the modesty of its walls, what truly remains is the capacity of these places to awaken in us peace and serenity.

I hope that, just as I did, you have enjoyed the visit.

Cheers, and until next time!
