Clumsy footsteps

IMG_6907.jpg

I always knew that this tree was there but this time I saw it differently. I had never noticed how almost human it looked. It was probably the light that transformed it, giving its branches an otherworldly look.

I am in the middle of olive harvesting but before I start I gave myself the time for a long walk around the village and of course in the olive groves. It was a luxury I needed before I enter the daily routine of the harvest.

And my camera needed it too :)

It was not long before I entered my olive grove and everything looked just as I had hoped. The olives were ripe and clean with no signs of pest infestation, the grass was growing and the trees looked ready to take the strain of the harvest. And let us not forget what harvesting really means. We are talking about hitting the trees hard enough for the olives to fall. Minor damage is expected and a thirsty tree will always suffer much more than a well watered one.

What do you think of this little house?

Would you stay in a place like this?

It was lived in, for a short while, a long time ago but now it is used as a storage space. I have thought about fixing it up again so I could stay overnight in the olive grove from time to time, but this is just one of those many plans that are still on hold.

The trunks of centuries old olive trees are so impressive. Look at the one in the next photo. I stood there for a moment just looking at it and it suddenly made perfect sense how Tolkien came up with the Ents, the walking trees that protect the forest.

What is going on with me today that trees keep looking human to me?

Looking at the pictures I took just five days ago, it feels like ages have passed. The olive grove now, where I work every day, has changed completely. The grass is pressed down from my endless coming and going, the olives are gradually removed from the trees and taken to the olive mill, and the serenity of the scenery has been disturbed. I wish I could do it differently but in this specific situation, I really can't.

But in a few days the harvest will be over and soon nature will erase my clumsy footsteps!

I would stay in that house, even though I'm sure those olive trees must look like ghosts at night... 😂
