Hello HIVEs!

My wife and I visited Budapest over the Easter weekend. The most famous photo subject is the Parliament building, which stands majestically on the banks of the Danube. The last time I was in the Hungarian capital was 10 years ago on a business trip. I took photos of the Parliament building back then as well. Today, I’d like to share three photos featuring this subject. Each photo was taken with a different camera. Decide for yourself which one you like best and let me know in the comments.

{Budapest Parlament}

The cover photo was taken around 2:00 a.m. I had set an alarm and then walked from the hotel to the banks of the Danube across from the Parliament building, carrying a Canon 7D and a tripod. I had placed the camera below street level, right at the water’s edge, and shot a series of exposures so I could stitch the photos together if needed. I was sure that at that hour, no one would disturb me. That was far from the case, because an Asian tourist nearly knocked over the tripod—camera and all. I was just able to jump in front of the tripod to stop it from falling.

The second image shows a photo taken with the iPhone 12 Pro. In the photo editing app, I increased the contrast and straightened the building vertically by -8°.

The last photo was taken with an Olympus E-M1 II. I wanted to try out the high-resolution mode here. By shifting the image sensor by half a pixel during the exposure, the camera captures 8 images and combines them into a single 50-megapixel image. Of course, this only works if the subject isn’t moving, so a tripod is required. What’s amazing is that the boats moving on the Danube during this shot were effectively removed from the image. In my case, I found this very useful. In post-processing, I only straightened the building vertically by -7°.

{Kettenbrücke + Parlament}

The Hungarian Parliament Building (Országház) in Budapest was constructed between 1885 and 1904 on the banks of the Danube. Standing 96 meters tall and 268 meters long, it is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world. The architect drew inspiration from the Palace of Westminster. The building was constructed in the Neo-Gothic style.
The Parliament has 365 staircases and 10 courtyards and houses the Hungarian coronation regalia, including the Crown of St. Stephen.

The next post will finally be about a light painting project I did in Budapest. So stay tuned!

Also bleib dran!

Beautiful photos! I’ve only been to Budapest once and that was right in the city center because I had a delivery there. 😁 It’s a pity that I rarely visit Hungary and haven’t had the chance to properly explore this wonderful city yet, but I hope that’s still ahead of me.
