I guess everyone wants to have a good New Year party and that's exactly what they did in one of Thailand's other seriously over-rated destinations.
The lack of concern for the environment or just anyone else is extremely annoying and profound in these images.

This is Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand on the morning of January 1st, 2026. Patong Beach is the busiest beach in all of Phuket and it is overcrowded as can be. I have a friend who lives in Phuket and the last time I went to go visit him there we stopped briefly by this hellhole of a beach and I wanted to get out of there as soon as we could. Unfortunately the rest of the island suffers from the same over-population that Patong has and by the time I was leaving his house on a weekend the number one thing that we did while I was there - or the thing we did that took up the majority of our time - was sitting in traffic.
But this level of complete lack of concern for others that is on full display at Patong on the morning of January 1st is just astounding.

People will be very quick to blame foreigners for this and they would mostly be correct in this finger pointing. However, I can say from having been there that these people didn't carry all of this down there from a distant shop, it was almost certainly sold by vendors there for a profit and I have been there on non party days and the vendors rarely will provide any sort of place for you to dispose of anything. It's almost like they want to carry their stuff down there to the beach, sell it at a huge markup, then not be responsible for its removal at all.
I'm not saying this as some sort of excuse for the people littering but I've been there with my own legs and seen it with my own eyes. If you are going to sell things to people in single use containers then not provide them with anywhere to dispose of it, this is what you end up with.

At the moment the government is not pointing any fingers and isn't really even talking about this at all because the tourism sector of Thailand has taken a serious hit in the past few years, if you can believe that from these images. In 2025 Thailand lost its number one spot for tourism in South East Asia for the first time since they started tracking tourism levels in the region and now is desperately trying to gain some of their former glory back.
For me, when you want a ton of people in a place, you also need to be willing and capable of dealing with that many people actually being there. The fact that Phuket is just one huge grid-locked traffic nightmare with no more space to build any more roads, and the fact that any time people get together no sort of disposal plan is enacted, kind of suggests to me that perhaps Thailand's tourism numbers are dropping to exactly where they should be.
They can't handle the amount of people they already attract and they are looking for more? That makes very little sense to me.
If I was partying on this beach though, I have to say that I would still not leave my bottles just on the ground, I would have carried them to at least near the street so that some sort of recycler might feel compelled to pick it up.
This is a terrible sight for sure, but the people who are jumping to conclusions to blame tourist for being irresponsible with their trash aren't seeing the whole picture here. Lack of facilities, lack of enforcement, and lack of care on the part of the people who benefit financially from these parties are to blame as well, perhaps even more so than the people that were in attendance.

I was going to say the same thing. That beach belongs to the city, so the city is responsible for garbage bins and cleaning. If they want visitors, they need to clean the place up.
The other thing is, people want clean beaches, but they are acting like animals. A bit more self consciousness would solve the problem.
We used to have a huge festival in our city (till it became so big there was not proper space to host it anymore and they moved it to another city) and vendors had some kind of buyback program, like collect 2.5 meter long streak of beer cups and get a free beer. You should have seen teenagers collecting soda cups and beer cups.
Plus, here all the recipients, beer bottles, cans, water bottles etc. have a small deposit fee when you buy them and you get it back when you dispose them at the shop. It's highly motivating.
It is shocking to read about the situation at Patong Beach and also to see people are acting like animals.
yeah I knew that the people here can behave irresponsibly but for literally everyone to just walk away from this and be like "yeah, that's fine" is just a testament to how selfish humanity as a whole is.
I like the sound of that free drink for turning in discarded cups and what not. There actually is a financial incentive placed on recycling here in Thailand but I guess it wasn't enough to bring people out to the sand. I think it is a question of reward over effort and since it is some distance and also there is nowhere ever to park at this location, has discouraged the people that would normally collect these things for a bit of pocket money from getting involved.
It's odd to me that this sort of thing only gets addressed if it ends up going viral. The government here doesn't seem to pay attention to any problem unless someone else exposes it to the world and makes the government look bad. Then, like clockwork, the government will act totally surprised and then point the finger at someone else, normally foreigners.
Before this recycling project, you could see bottles thrown left and right and garbage bins full of them. Now you can't see one thrown away as there are poor people monitoring every inch of space, collecting every possible thing that worth something.
Any event has a lot of mobile garbage bins placed everywhere, as fines for organizers for littering are not small.
There are incentives to counter carelessness, but individuals should care too. What you presented here is inhuman.
Absolutely disgusting and there should be accountability all round. Glass bottles should never be allowed on a beach due to people walking bare foot not thinking the beach at one point looked like this. Those that attend these parties should also be held responsible and not just the people running the city. If I was a tourist and saw this I would never return.
i hadn't even thought about the glass bottle damage potential but absolutely, that should be a factor but then again a lot of things should be a factor in Thailand but money runs the game, no matter what it is... safety and environment be damned.
This beach is a great place where we can spend our happy times with our family in an environmentally friendly way. But in such a place, all these practical bottles and plastic products cause great harm to the environment. Which needs to be reformed by all of us. However, such an environment is harmful to the health of the visitors.
