Marble statue park in Da Nang, Vietnam
One of the tourist attractions here in the city of Da Nang is the Marble Mountain. It's one of those things that once you have gone to it one time you don't really ever need to go again. I can understand the importance but I don't really know if a mountain that is made of a great deal of marble is really all that special or unique to this part of the world.
I tend to stay away from it because there are like a hundred busses a day that turn up there and loads of people go up to the top, take some photos, get forced into a gift shop, and then get back on the bus. Honestly, I struggle to think of a more boring way to travel than this but then again, I speak the language that the entire world caters to and that might not be the case for anyone from China, Korea, or Japan, which are the main tourist groups here.
Nearby there is a little park that none of the busses go do though, and this is where they put up little displays for the locals in a very strange park where it is a million degrees because someone thought it was a good idea to cut down all the trees, lol.
The statues are arranged around this big circle area and it almost seemed like a clock. I feel bad for that grass that is all dead though. I remember someone saying that it is really tough to get grass to grow in direct sunlight because you need to water the hell out of it or it just burns. This section of the park is a good example of how that can be true.
See those trees in the background? Why on earth did they tear all of them down for this park? It kind of goes against everything that I feel like I know about parks. Maybe it was a construction project that just never happened and the city took the land back. Who knows? I do know it isn't a very relaxing place to be in the middle of the day. I was sweating like mad and I was just standing still.
All of these statues are meant to be one-of-a-kind and hand carved. I've been paying pretty close attention and looking for duplicates the entire time I have been here and I haven't noticed any repeats so I'm going to say that I think they are telling the truth about this and that each one of these is an original piece.
it's kind of difficult to tell what most of these even are. This one almost looks kind of Aztec in a way.
This one appears to be an image of the Marble Mountains themselves and I guess that is cool. One thing that is noteworthy about this one is that Vietnam is a very conservative country and seeing boobies on a statue or an image or any art is very rare.
From this angle you can kind of make out the statues in the background and how they are arranged in a circular pattern. A good deal of time was put into this as these statues are quite heavy seeing as how they are a solid piece of rock.
I will take a moment here to once again state my admiration for the Vietnamese people and their respect for other people's property. In my home country it would only be a matter of hours before teenagers broke these things and covered them in spray paint. I don't know what it is about the west but we do seem to be pretty dedicated to destroying just about anything.
There were no guards here and this park is completely open at night yet nothing ever happens to this stuff. Either the policing is quite brutal or there is just a different attitude on the part of the population. Whatever it is, I like that it is that way.
This park can be found just north of the Marble Mountain area but no tour is going to go there. You will have to seek it out on your own a bicycle or rental motorbike. Bring an umbrella or cover yourself in sun cream because I am not joking about the fact that there is zero sun cover in this entire park and that is probably the reason why I was the only one there.

maybe this park has no visitors is another reason for being graffiti free lol. I just do not get why anyone would go and visit this place.
i only visited it because it was there and I like statues. It's quite busy in the evenings from what I have seen in the past with people coming out to do their half-assed exercise in an open space. That's one thing that Da Nang, and vietnam just generally speaking kind of lacks: Open space. Everything is packed in like crazy due to such a high population density.
