Oh I didn't know this name, nice. Earthen pots allow air and moisture to enter the sides of the pot, and then this air is used by tiny roots at the edge of the soil inside. It also acts as a wick to remove excess moisture from the potting soil. So it actually is a good tip which I forgot to mention. : )

What comes from the earth can go back into the earth.

I often dig a whole for pot size, then crack and break away sides it will all crumble in time adding more stone into the soil that we lack on the coast.
