It's that time of year, once again. Most of the garden is done except beets and a few carrots. Now that it is officially colder it was time to pull out all the plants and prepare the beds for the winter.

Mika was on hand to assist in digging up the potatoes out of the large, raised bed. I had planted the purple variety of sweet potatoes for the first time, and it will be the last. I had vines growing everywhere and only got a few decent potatoes from them.

Mika went off with one of the small roots and enjoyed having a treat after helping with the digging.

I only had two turnips that actually grew amongst the vines. They were a decent size considering.

I put down a layer of shredded egg cartons before the manure was spread.

Hubby goes to a nearby horse farm and fills these tubs for me every fall. He usually makes three trips in all; that is enough to put a nice layer on top of all the gardens.

We managed to get half of the vegetable gardens done before the rain started. Hubby will make a third trip this week when the rain stops and we will do the butterfly gardens and the raspberry bed. This part of prepping will be done and lastly, we will put on a layer of ground up leaves to mulch for the winter.

It is hard to believe that it is the middle of October already and the leaves are falling quickly from the trees. The foilage has been more yellow and brown with little red this fall. I think the leaves have already reached their peak colors too.
I imagine many of you are doing the same as myself and preparing your gardens for the season. Then again, many of you are just starting yours and I wish you a bountiful harvest.

I planted some purple sweet potatoes for the first time as well this year, and had to cut back the vines 4 or 5 times. I'm waiting for the leaves to die back before I harvest. Not sure what I will find 😬
I hope you get more than I did! Next year I will go back to the regular sweet potatoes. I did enjoy frying the small leaves with peppers and onions with white wine vinegar. That was tasty!
This is a well-managed garden, everything has its place and it is time to grow vegetables like potatoes and others. I want to improve my garden by following you. I saw, there is wooden beds are used to make partitions. It is a good idea. Thanks for sharing....
Thanks for viewing my garden update. I wish you a grand experience with your gardening.
I really admire how clean and organized your garden. Your dedication to preparing everything before winter truly motivates me to keep improving my own backyard garden.
Thank you, Dreamrona, I do my best to take good care of the soil for healthy plants and big harvests. I wish you well with your gardens too!
Hey, I really like your vegetable garden or yard. It even gave me an idea for how to organize my own garden, but there's just one thing... Could you lend me Mika to help me? Hehe.
Hahaha, Mika is a great helper in the garden. She would love to assist you. ♥
What a great assistant you have!
Thanks @hispapro, Mika is a good gardening buddy. lol
Preparation of soil through cold months always a great way to jump into Spring season when everything warms up again, simply turn the soil and ready to go with nourished ground again.
Your gardening always interesting living in cold climate.

Yes indeed, it is a lot of work taking care of the gardens all year long. Yet, it keeps me moving which is good for this old lady's bones! How's the fence coming this week?
Slowly started today with materials arriving, next two days should hopefully see completion. Need to get out of the house for a park walk, starting feeling walls closing in sometimes.

Yeah, sweet potatoes take a lot of room, lots of vines. That's funny Mika liked the little sweet potato. Out working in the Big garden again today, between days of rain.
Me too! I have more buckets of manure to put down as today is sunny but the rest of the week more rain. Glad you are able to work in the big garden between drops.
What a great season you've had - I can't believe we are at the clean up point now!
I can't either, but fall is in full swing and getting wetter and colder. Cleanup is in between raindrops, lol.
I did have a great season and tons to harvest, I hope you did as well.
Yeah it's still going! And the new season starting!
