Margarita tomato and paprika seeds/ Semillero de tomate margariteño y pimentón

Hello, friends of Hive and Hive Garden, I hope you’re all doing well.
I haven’t been round here for a while because I’ve been busy with lots of things and the weather hasn’t been good enough for planting either, but I’ve been getting ready to try and start a seedbed of tomatoes and peppers using soil I’ve been collecting, and I’ve also been putting together a compost heap to improve the soil because that’s the problem at my place – the soil is very poor.

The vegetable patch is for my family’s own consumption, so it isn’t very big because, although there’s plenty of space around the house, the soil isn’t very good and we can’t really afford to buy fertiliser, plant food and that sort of thing. So I decided to plant them in baskets or makeshift pots and prepare some good soil to try and get some results.

Before setting up the seedbed, I started saving all the vegetable peelings, greens and eggshells we use at home, and as there are lots of wasteland with tall bushes where I live, I started collecting all the dry leaves and branches that have rotted down and can be used as compost.

I collected a large amount of that compost and divided it into several tubs or buckets, adding all the waste I’d been saving up. I watered them from time to time, and when I saw the worms starting to appear, I began my seedbed for ‘Margariteño’ tomatoes – a variety native to Margarita Island – as well as for sweet peppers.

The seedbed came along nicely and a few days ago I was able to transplant the tomato plants into individual pots with prepared soil; most of them took to the transplant well, but I’ve lost a few – the good thing is that I planted plenty.

The paprika plants aren’t ready to be transplanted yet, but I’ve got everything ready for when they have at least four leaves – apart from the two that sprout when they germinate – and when I get round to doing that, I’ll let you know how it’s all going.

Hola amigos de Hive y de Hive Garden, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien.
Tenía un tiempo sin venir por aquí porque he estado ocupado en muchas cosas y no había tampoco un buen tiempo como para sembrar, pero yo me he estado preparando para tratar de sacar adelante un semillero de tomates y pimentón con una tierra que he estado recogiendo y también armando un compostaje para mejorar la tierra porque ese es el problema en mi casa, que la tierra es muy mala.

El semillero es para consumo de mi casa, así que no es muy grande porque aunque hay bastante terreno en la casa, la tierra no es muy buena y tampoco estamos en condiciones para comprar abono, vitaminas y esas cosas, entonces se me ocurrió sembrarlas en cestas o macetas improvisadas y preparar una tierra buena para tratar de tener resultados.

Antes de hacer el semillero me puse a guardar todas las conchas de vegetales, verduras, cáscaras de huevo que usamos en la casa y como donde vivo hay muchos terrenos baldíos con matas grandes me puse a recoger todo lo que son las hojas secas y ramas que están descompuestos que sirven de abono.

De ese abono recogí una cantidad grande y lo dividí en varios tobos o cubetas y le eché todos los desechos que estuve acumulando y cada cierto tiempo los regaba y cuando vi que estaban saliendo las lombrices comencé con el semillero de tomate margariteño que es una especie de tomate autóctono de la isla de Margarita y también de pimentón.

El semillero salió bien y hace unos días pude trasplantar a unos envases individuales con la tierra preparada las matas de tomate y a la mayoría le fue bien con el trasplante, pero se han perdido varias, lo bueno es que sembré muchas.

Las de pimentón todavía no están para transplantarlas, pero ya tengo todo listo para cuando tengan por lo menos 4 hojas aparte de las dos hojas que sacan cuando germinan y cuando haga ese trabajo les vengo a contar cómo evoluciona todo.
