Garden Update: The Wedgetail has Migrated, and Other Stories

The Wedgetail eagle, cut from a piece of pool tin, has been screwed to the new shed, and it feels like we have truly moved. We cut this out some ten years ago and it has taken on an emotional significance, overlooking our projects, our lives.

The chook house has been built, well, the cage anyway. There's still foxes round here. They seem happy. We have some tin leftover from the old roof, so eventually that'll make a proper shed for them. However the coop does protect them from marauding magpies who taunt them constantly like gangs of errant teenagers.

I do let them free range once a day, a great game where I shout at them intermittently to get off the herb garden. As you can see below, the giant slab has gone and all that dirt will become dedicated to raised beds. Watch this space!

This time we have already drawn a plan, to scale as well. I don't suppose it'll make sense to you, but we are impressed we have gone that far.

On the deck the heartsease thirsts for water and is plucked for salads. I also have a large pot with three types of basil and a cherry tomato.

I've gone for the more crowded veg patch this year, starting from the premise that some plants shelter and shade, and the weeds don't have room to grow. It seems to be working. We have tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, beans and cucumbers coming, and of course zucchini.

This garden won't stay here - it's just a temporary measure, eventually being replaced by a edibles, natives and flowers garden. I've been planning it for once, jotting down what I want for mid layers, taller plants, lower. There's a lot of work to be done - poor Jamie has his work cut out for him!

I've been inspired by a book I got from the library with heaps of cool ideas. She very much has my way of thinking - gardens should be places of wonder, a feast for the senses and for the table.

It's a little frustrating, seeing it all in my minds eye but not quite being able to execute it yet. Patience I guess is called for. Bless my husband for building it for me - with my hip, I can't do much but plan, provide moral support, and shop Marketplace and plant stores.

I did pick up this pair of corten steel planter rings for an absolute bargain today. They are exactly what we need to soften a corner. I'll need more to create the visual triangle I'm after.

It's fun planning in a small space with a little budget to spend, unlike last time where we had no money and no idea what we were doing. Now we have experience and just enough drive left to see it happen. Hope you'll enjoy the journey with us.

With Love,

I so look forward to see how it all comes together. No doubt Jaimie is looking forward to getting it all done too. :-)

I'm waiting for the young hens to arrive in February, they can do real damage to the garden if you're not careful.
It's nice to have a plan, and I often have one and plan and then on the spot there's a deviation and I use the current situation.
But yes it's good to have a plan so we know where to start.
And now I can't wait for spring.

Oh yes I usually do things ad hoc and organically - but this time I think it's good to map it all out. I'm worried I won't have enough growing space but I think I will adapt and add on to a base as I go, and maybe think about more vertical growing. Oh yes I know the anticipation of Spring - itchy green thumbs!

It's so unusual to see tomatoes blooming in January. When we have snow, you have summer. And when we have summer, it's probably cold where you are.

There's not many Hive gardeners down south as far as we are so it's even wierder to see tomatoes in January. Most of you northerners will never get used to it, hahaha!

Well, things are coming along! Your heart's ease has the most glorious colors! Mine here has white and a small amount of blue where yours has yellow. I'm glad to hear of gardens progressing but sad you can't actually do it, yet.

I love the variation in them, particularly a tiger striped one! It's alright, I have veggies growing and can do some things, and have a willing slave husband.

It's getting somewhere! Glad to see your progress there! It's quite impressive how much you've already accomplished while I... well... I'm on vacation, that's my excuse! 😅

Finally seeing a new post from you with a mushroom picture in one of the backgrounds, I had tagged you in a Snap that you might have missed:
