LUT Hive Garden Journal 2026 #6
It's been a little over 3 weeks since my last LUT Garden Journal, and there's been quite a lot of growth in my garden, but sadly not much harvest.
French beans
The other morning I got a lovely surprise and saw a french bean develop. It wasn't there the previous night! It's the first time I've managed to grow a bean. This photo was taken a few days ago and since then it's grown and is touching the leave below. There are three beans in total on my plant, hardly enough for a meal, or even a snack, but it's a start ☺️
Long beans
My long beans have grown up a lot. They've climbed to the top of my greenhouse and along the side creating a nice shade. They'll probably continue to grow still, but I don't want them to grow outside as there's no support, so I've nip the ends off. That's suppose to stop them growing and channel the energy back to the flowers. So far there's no beans yet.
Lettuce
Like all other of my seedlings, most of my lettuce didn't make it. I only have 4 left. One is developing a beautiful head, just like the ones you buy in stores. The other has lots of leaves, I wonder if it will wrap into a head as well. The other two are still very young with just a few leaves. If all goes well, they should harvest in nice succession.
Tomato
These seeds are from last year's crop and I read they may not produce the same plant because they're pollinated differently. Maybe that's why these look a little sad, and have a lot of branches and leaves. I've had to cut back quite a lot of leaves to concentrate the energy to the fruit. Yesterday I saw the first tomato turn red, it think I will be eating a lot of tomatoes is the next few weeks.
Courgette
My courgette also looks under developed. Not sure what's happening. Last year I grew them vertically and they were fine, so I don't think that's the issue. I've watered them a lot, may they need more fertiliser. Most of them didn't pollinate, apart from this one that I harvested the other day.
Water spinach
I'm going to give these fast growing plants a couple more weeks, then they should be ready to be harvested. I know in some places, they're treated as weed, but in many places in Asia, they're eaten as greens. It's interesting how food culture is different across the world, isn't it?
NuMex twilight chilli
This is the only plant that I bought this year. I've always wanted a chili plant and when my germination failed, and decided to buy a young plant. This variety is called NuMex twilight and has grown a lot since I got it. The chillis start off as purple, then yellow like the few in the middle, then it goes to orange and red. I can't wait to see all the colours as they grow. Apparently it's a very colourful and pretty sight, and is edible!
Flowers
It's nice to have some colour in the garden to balance out the green. These crocosmia are still blooming nicely.

Wow, that's a lot of peppers on your chili plant. That is going to be an impressive haul for you. Lettuce is dangerous over in the US right now, so it is smart to grow your own! My weeds are all still going strong at the Bozz house!
I read about the outbreak, that's scary. I hope the Mexican source they identified is the only one and there aren't anymore lurking about.

Wow, your little garden is quite an experience… the tomatoes look very prosperous. I’ve been told that the more you surround your crops with flowers, the better it is. There should be colour to attract pollinators and to help fight off pests.
So, was the courgette ripe enough to pick? Did you turn it into something tasty?
The courgette looked a little pale, but it was fine when I cooked it. Very tasty.
I see quite a lot of bees around, definitely a good thing
It's nice to see lettuce at this time of year, ours is in full swing, although it rarely makes it to a head, my wife eats it :)
Now is the season for cucumbers, tomatoes and purslane.

I wonder why some grow into a head, and others don't 🤔? It's so odd, same batch of seed, different development. Isn't nature amazing.
I've never grown any cucumbers, or heard of purslane before. I googled it, and it's a type of edible weed. Sounds interesting, do you eat it as salad?
And the sunflower, yes it's definitely over two metres tall. It's very annoying that my neighbour is enjoying my labour 😖
As long as it's edible, it's not a weed in my opinion :)
We use it most often in salads, finely chop it, add tomatoes cut into slices and cucumbers into rings, a little parsley, oil, salt and finally a cube of feta cheese.
Purslane has a slightly bitter-sour taste and goes well with other ingredients. And it's very healthy.
Your tomatoes are a bit forward compared to mine hehehe gosh hopefully they get red until the end of summer!

Sorry I took so long to get to this. I usually come to you when you come comment on mine as I've been so slack with Hive in general (unless I'm at work with nothing else to do!).
My courgettes did the same thing as yours this year. I think perhaps a pollinator issue? When I started pollinating by hand, getting the male flowers to rub against the female ones, I had better success.
