LUT Hive Garden Journal 2026 #4
My tomatoes are finally out and the gardening season is officially starting for me. This year I planted my tomatoes in buckets to save space in my raised beds. I have 8 plants and would have planted more if I have space. I didn't want to double park them. I'm stringing them up this year, planting one end of the string inside the soil and tying the other end at the top of the fence.
Now I have more space in my raised beds for other plants. I planted two courgettes, last year I had a very good harvest with just one plant, who knows how much I will harvest this year. There's some space around them, I might plant a green pepper there, I have some seedlings which should be ready to be planted out in a couple of weeks.
Next to the courgettes are my Chinese broccoli. All my bok choi and lettuce seedlings failed miserably this year. Luckily my sister gave me a lot of broccoli seedlings, otherwise I'll have nothing to plant.
And next to that is my choyate plant which is coming on really well. I sowed some radish seeds in front of it a few days ago and can already see some small shoots today. Radish aren't really my cup of tea, but I think it's important to increase efficiency for my garden, plus my pickled radishes were quite nice last time. Pickles have become my feel good plant.
There are more Chinese broccoli plants in the other raised bed. I've planted two more tomatoes next to it, some peas and a couple of beans. There's nothing in front of the bed at the moment. It's very annoying as my lettuce was supposed to go there. I've sowed more seeds today, this time indoors instead of in the greenhouse to increase the chances of them germinating. In the meanwhile, I might plant more radishes there!
Greenhouse
My little greenhouse has been extremely useful in the pre season. There are still more tomatoes to be planted somewhere... as well as a courgette and the green peppers. If I can't germinate any leavy veggies, I'll eventually plant them all in the beds. At the other side are more Chinese broccoli, and seven long bean plants. According to AI, they grow to 2 to 3m tall which will be a problem for me as my greenhouse is very small. I'm still chatting to AI on what to do. AI is very helpful for this, I'm not totally anti AI, I just hate it when people use it to cheat to monetise on Hive.
Automated irrigation system
Another major addition to my garden this year is the automatic irrigation system hubby did for me. You may have noticed all the tubes and a couple of black boxes, one in front of the choyate and another by the Chinese kale. These are the receivers, and the green thing by the courgettes is to check the soil moisture. All of them connect to the irrigation system.
The dashboard below shows all the metrics and the two hose SWV-1 and SWV-2, one for each side of my L shape raised bed. Last year I only had one single hose and the water pressure was very weak when it got to the end of the bed. Learning from experience, hubs split it in two this year.
But the beauty of all this, is everything is automated. Hubs has two scripts, one for the morning, and another for the evening. Watering is based on the sunrise and sunset time. In this instance, it starts two hours before sunset if the soil moisture is below 70%. SWV-1 will water 2 times, each time 5 liters. There's a 3 minute gap in between each water to let the water seep through, but that's set elsewhere, not in the script here. After 12 minutes delay, SWV-2 will start the same sequence. Then after another 12 minutes, the whole sequence will start again for both.
I'm still tweaking the metrics like the moisture level cutoff, how much to water each round, how many rounds and the delay. And of course how many times to water a day and at what time.
So far the automation is working perfectly. We get a report and confirmation of job done. Here we can see it in the timeline.
I know a lot of people have automated water irrigation systems using a timer. This goes one by step further to customise various metrics according to the weather and time of the year. But the most important thing is that it kept my geeky husband happy and occupied and did something useful with his smart home system for me 😄. Now I don't have to worry about my garden when I go away in the summer.

So you like the helpful AI not the generative AI? Sibling dearest and I are the same, I had some chats with the Ecosia and Brave bots (and the DDG bot but for some reason that one seemed less helpful regardless of which engine I was using) when planning my pollinator cottage garden XD
I am being very mean and actively avoiding anything that reads or looks like AI fics/art/posts in general on here
The watering system looks pretty cool! I think J was thinking about setting one up at one stage, who knows when that will ever be though, our normal timer one hasn't been used for quite a while as he completely gave up on the garden for a bit XD and not having to worry about it when you're away is an added bonus :D
Going away in summer when my garden is growing was always a worry, luckily that's not an issue anymore. In the absence of an automated system, the timer still does its job, albeit not so sophisticated. Hopefully you'll get yours sorted out soon

AI is good for gardening advice, but I still give the freshness of experience
Automated irrigation system I believe this is very useful, especially if we are planning a vacation or a trip. But in my case I think I would get a headache from the price for my entire garden. Although I already have a watering system installed, so some automatic or semi-automatic system as an addition would not be expensive, at least I think
The additional cost we incurred were those receivers, can't remember how much they were but not unreasonable expensive. The convenience is worth it though, because it won't water if the soil moisture is very wet, and I can adjust things if I'm away, like I can add a manual water if it's very hot during the day.
AI is great, but I also like how this community can give a lot of advice and help as well.

Yep, hubby's home assistant is doing all that for him. It's taken a little while to iron things out last and this year, I think we've nailed it now, at least I'm happy it's doing what I expect it to do
I picked a few strawberries as well, that's the only ones I'm grow. The rest I've had to protect in little mesh pouches
I just picked loads more raspberries. They are pretty low maintenance, but I did weed around them at the weekend.
I tried Home Assistant ages ago and may try it again. These things can eat time.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
