LUT Hive Garden Journal 2026 #3
I love watching my lavenders bloom every day. I have 9 plants in the front of my house and they grow so fast now. Every time I walk past, (I think) I can smell a faint whiff of its fragrance. It's very satisfying.
The other flowers I have are the gadiolus planted last year. There are no flowers yet but there are loads of new shoots. Not sure what to do with them, and whether they will suck energy from the mature flowers and slow down their bloom.
My first harvest this year is the low hanging fruit radish. Here's the first few I harvested and the rest were be even bigger. After reading @riverflows post about pickling, I tried it and surprisingly it was quite nice. I might plant some more if I got spare space.
I planted my peas out and apart from one time I caught a slug nibbling on a leaf, so far they're doing ok. The white fluffy stuff around it is sheep wool. Apparently it deters slug. It didn't stop that one nibbling away! Since it's organic and there's been no more incidents, I've left them as mulch.
Talking of slugs, my first strawberry wasn't so lucky today. How very annoying!!😡
Like the rest of Europe, we've had some very hot weather these few days. At last!! I can start to plant things out. My sister gave me a lot of Chinese Kale seedlings and I figured I'd test the water and plant them out. Chinese kale is quite expensive, if they all survive, I'd be saving quite a few pennies. The five plants at the back are sunflowers.
The other veggies I like is bak choi. The timing for my first batch wasn't very good. I kept them in my greenhouse when I went to Alicante and the lack of sun caused them to be quite leggy. I still managed to harvest enough for one meal. So not all was lost. I'm going to sow more seeds next month.
In my last LUT garden journal I mentioned I planted a choyate. Nothing happened for a whole month and I thought it had died. Then suddenly a few days ago I noticed some green underneath the straw! Look how much the new shoots have grown over 4 days.
In a few days time I'm going to plant out my tomatoes. This is just one batch , I have another pot. I have sowed too many seeds and will probably end up giving a lot away.
The courgettes will go out as well next week. I sowed four seeds, gave two plants to my sister, as well as the tray of tomatoes. Then my other sister gave me a few more courgettes today. Now I have to find someone else to give the surplus courgettes away.
These green peppers took forever to germinate, I sowed them two months ago and had nearly given up on them. Maybe I sowed them too early when it was still very cold. Anyway, it looks good now, just need to give them more TLC.
And finally my herbs, thyme and sage, I want to build a herb patch. I could have bought some from the shops, but I like a challenge and there's a lot more satisfaction to grow them from seeds. I'm a bit gutted that only one sage seed germinated,but that's fine. The thyme did well. You win some and lose some.
The next few days will be busy as I start to plant things out in my garden. Can't wait for the growing season to start at last.
Awesome! So many plants! I hope the bounty will be plenty :-) I had to water both gardens today. And I really have to work on the compost at the bakery, the earth there is terrible, very sandy and at the same time very hard. So, I need organic matter in there! Which is what I'm working on now. A friend is a gardener and regularly has cut grass and such, so I asked him to always drop it with me :-D
I have clay soil in my west facing front garden, luckily the lavender don't seem to mind, but it's very difficult to grow other things there. I don't know if I'd prefer that or sandy soil.... I dump my cut grass onto my raised beds as well because we're not allowed to dispose of them as general waster, I think they help the soil, if not, then at least it's organic it shouldn't do much harm.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new

Looking good! I've never seen radishes like that. We tend to only get the round kind where I live. I don't have much of a garden this year. More weeds than anything else. I think I have kind of given up on putting in some flowers like I had planned. I just don't believe I will have the time.
I grew two varieties, the others were round ones, I thought I took a photo of my first radish photo, but can't find it now which is a bit of a bummer.
Some flowers don't need any maintenance, they just come back every year. Lavender being one, and I got a few others as well. Perfect for lazy people like me 😄
That would be about my speed too! We have some hostas in one of our beds, but I don't ever do too much with those. We have some roses too and I cut those back each fall.

Your pea - that's great. I always pull out everything after the season so never know if they survived the winter. My sister said I should have kept my marigolds from last year. Apparently they regrow. Mine were massive last year and this year none has germinated

Glad you tried the pickles! They make radishes palatable and less spicey. My favourite way to have them currently is fried broccoli with ramen noodles and the radish on the side. But also nice in anything that needs a bit of fresh crunch.
I hope mine grows so well. Last year my sister's plant had well over 100, she gave me loads and I had to give to my friends.
Yes , I noticed the radishes was less spicy after I pickled them, that was very nice as I'm not a big fan of the spiciness. Once I plant in my veggies, I'm going to fill in spaces with more radishes

Hello everyone I hope you are all good and well today in this post is some of the evidence to prove my case
If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

Looks great, we've held off putting things out, just putting out tomatoes today (Weds) and corn - been an odd May.
If you have too many courgettes just get a perpetual barbeque going, they're fabulous with a bit of BBQ sauce glaze and chargrill, just half them lengthways!
The problem with courgettes is that they take up a lot of space even if I train them upwards. Do you have an allotment? I hear it's very difficult to get one
What a great garden you have going. I have peppers that I am seeing will grow through the summer. I'm so excited to plant the fall garden in my new place. I hope it is successful as yours!
