During my last garden report I mentioned I was going to get a raised bed installed in my garden. Ta da!!! Here it is. Now I have some proper places where I can start growing my own food.

The first thing I planted are my wolfberry plants. They're in the corner as they don't need much sun and attention as these are hardy plants. In an ideal world they will grow taller into mini bushes. The photo on the right was taken 6 weeks after they were planted. So far so good.
I planted a lot of bok choi seedlings in early March but I knew they probably wouldn't make it as the seeds are quite old. They were sent to me by @sjarvie5 a few years ago. Anyway, I still planted them in my raised bed. I was so proud when they went in, all 60 of them, and had this vision of a bumper crop.

Soon after I went on my US trip and was away for 3 weeks. I had help to come round to water them, but due to the weak seedlings, hot weather, and the army of slugs, they were never going to make it. A lot of them were eaten by the slugs, and those that did grow, the leaves were all eaten by the slugs as well. Here's what they look like over 10 days.
And here's what they look like a few days ago. Quite a few have flowered and I've left them to collect the seeds to try again next year. End of my bok choi journey this year.

For me, it's very difficult to know when to harvest things grown under ground. I read online the time is right to harvest garlic when the plant flops over. I dug one up when that happened, it has cloves of garlic but it doesn't form a firm bulb. Looks like I harvested too early. For my first ever garlic, I'm pretty pleased with it and now I'm hanging it up to dry. A week later, the others flopped as well, I left it for longer before I dug them up. They were even more underdeveloped than the first one so I just left them next to plants to deter the slugs. There's one more garlic plant that I have dug up yet. This has always been the biggest and healthiest one. I'm going decide next week if I'm going to dig it up. I'd appreciate thoughts from any experienced gardeners out there.

With all my bak choi crop gone, I've been relying on my sister to give me bits and pieces from her garden. Chinese chives on the left hardy and very easy and quick to regrow. The sprint onion in the front are from scraps. And my sister gave me 3 tomato seedlings. 2 have succumbed to the slugs and I think this one might have been saved because it's the nearest to the chives. Plus UK is very cold this summer, not sure if it will make through..

My sister also gave me 4 broad beans and 1 courgette seedlings. There are only 3 broad beans seedlings left now. With hindsight, I probably planted them out too early and should have waited a few more weeks till they were bigger and stronger. Lesson learned for next year.

I bought these two plants last year and they have survived the winter. After pruning them back they have started to grow new leaves. I'm particularly happy with the lemon verbena, it's really come along nicely and has a lovely fragrance when I walk past.

I've had these two plants for 2 years and this year they are producing more strawberries. There was one single strawberry that turned bright red the other week, then over night a horrible slug got to it and started to nibble away. Now I have sat the pots on top of a plastic container, and the plastic container sits inside a tray of water. So far this seems to have worked and my strawberries are safe!!

I haven't figured out what to plant in this big planter yet, it's quite deep. The other week I bought some nice flowers to brighten up the summer. I probably won't be doing this again next year as it's too expensive. Maybe I will grow the flowers from seeds in spring. Will need to think about this.

And finally, I still have a bit more work to do in this corner of my garden. It gets no sunshine and the grass is in bad condition. In my next garden report, it will be transformed and can't wait to show you the changes. See you next month.

Looking good! I have the same problem with my garlic. I don't know if I should pull it or not. I planted it two years ago and it is just now finally coming back. I have zero clue how the bulbs even look. I've got another question for you... Did you experience altitude sickness when you were in the mountains over here? I don't know what the elevation of the UK is, but I've been starting to read some (dumb idea I know) and I am concerned I might have issues with the altitude.
We landed and left in Denver which at 5280ft is already quite high altitude, so I reckon we were already climatized when we landed, and weren't impacted. Apart from one of my sisters, she wasn't feeling too well before the journey and with the travelling around, suffered from a bit of altitude sickness when we were at Bryce Canyon which was around 9000 ft.
I read altitude sickness is very random, sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't and sometimes even the healthiest people get it, but not others. When I was in Peru, I got it one morning, and we had to move quickly to our next destination which was at a lower altitude. Once we got there, I was ok. This time in America, I was ok all along. I wouldn't worry too much, if you feel dizziness or short of breath, just walk very slow or sit down and rest.
FYI, UK is very low altitude, our highest point is just 4413 ft
Thanks for the info. There was talk of heading up Pikes Peak which is somewhere around 14,400 feet I think.
To protect the plants in your garden from slugs and pests, cover the soil you plant with white pebbles or white powder chalk. My mother had a garden. If he was brave against harmful insects, he continued his war.
Regarding garlic cultivation, I can say this. In a garden, it would not be appropriate to grow garlic in the same bed for more than about 3 years. Because the soil will be exhausted in three years. Even if you feed the plant well, as its heads grow, it reaches a certain weight. I also wish to see peppers, cucumbers and beans in your garden. My mother and I worked hard on gardening during our high school years.
Thanks for the advice.
I hear beans are easy to grow, hopefully mine will survive, I planted some seeds from a green pepper that I bought recently, but nothing has happened yet, it's only been a week. We have quite a cold summer this year, now it is only 15 degrees, I think maybe the weather is too cold ...
Beautiful plantings and hard work, it takes a lot of patience and dedication to get the plants to grow as they should. Those strawberries look splendid and the flowers are beautiful ❤️
I admire those who have the ability to take care of the garden like this, I still have a long way to learn.
I'm still learning, luckily there are a lot of experts on Hive who I can turn to
Sad the slugs got the bok choy. The raised beds are beautiful and you have garlic and strawberries, two things I have never grown. Awesome.
Hopefully I'll have better luck next year. I'm going to collect the seeds from a few of the bok choi so I can extend your gift.
That is what I do too. I am glad a few went to seed so you can.
It is beautiful when you have home-grown fruits and vegetables at home, it is a very nice experience.
I remembered when once in a small space that I had at home I planted chives, every day I passed by to watch them and see their growth, I was very excited when I saw that they were reaching an ideal size to be plucked and used in cooking.
Don't be discouraged if at first you are not very good at sowing , little by little you will get the experience @livinguktaiwan
Thanks for your encouragement. It will definitely take time to learn, and hopefully I will do a bit better next year and harvest something.
You have a really cool space set up for your garden. My wife and I are planning out where we are going to be putting our raised garden beds for next year.
And don't forget a play area for the little man. He will be running around next summer
I really like the way you did your walkway. I think I'll do a similar border. Are those bricks singles, or are they doubled/tripled up? Does that make sense? Are they concreted? Probably not...
Cheers.
They're paving bricks, just one row concreted in so they don't move and keep my turf edge nice and neat. Double/triple? Way too expensive!!!!
How are you doing recently?
Concrete, it is.
Not that bad. I hope the same or better for you and yours. <3

Wow! You are challenging yourself (and nature) by planting seeds that are very risky for UK climate conditions! Btw. your garden looks great!
I feel like my challenge is against the slugs at the moment. Every evening I go out looking for them. The very first day I found 60!! Now it's less than 10 each day
Huh... those nasty snails like to eat juicy salad... I suppose you searched for solutions on the Internet...
But, if there are fewer and fewer, that's a good sign!
Yes, the slugs are horror for gardeners 🤷♀️ but this looks all very fine by now. And it looks as if there would be some space for a pumpkin to join the #hwc2024 Hive World Championship 2024 by @der-prophet ? 😘😘😘
I think by now there is no paricipant from UK 🤔 how can this be!?
Yes, as far as I know there is no one from the UK yet
I wonder we have many gardeners on Hive here....?

I will be lucky if I can even grow a tomato this year, let alone a pumpkin!! I think the slugs would love it 😃
Oh Just plant more pumpkins at the end they will grow faster than slugs can eat 😅

Looks great. Whoever made it did a great job. I am hoping to make some raised planters in the next day or so but I think I am too late to grow veg for this year.
Same here. I have all this space, but nothing to plant in them as all my seedlings have died. I might end up growing potatoes now as all the greens seems to be eaten up by slugs
Strawberries!! 🤤 Now when the slugs are staying away from it because of those techniques (plastic container in the tray of water) I can come and eat the strawberries all by myself!!! 😂
Btw, this is the most organized raised bed I have ever seen. You planted the seeds in perfect lines and at a perfect distance! 👏
You do not know how pleased I was with myself when I planted this 😁. I had this vision of a bed full to healthy green veggies that I could go and pick and put on my plate every day.
My strawberries, will be ready next week, I can share 😄
that is coming on very nicely already a great improvement
I feel like I got a big wine glass but no wine to drink 😂

Raised beds a brilliant idea for gardens, now down to what to plant perhaps look here for ideas Companion plants in UK. Basically look what you wish to plant then ask nursery or google what helps 🙂
This type of planting works here in South Africa assisting each plant to maximize the soil and conditions.

The planters look fantastic and make a great border but I guess it would be kindest to say you had 'mixed fortunes' in the growing department!
Gardens take time to establish and find rhythms and if it's all new to you, you learn as you go along. Have you not thought of doing a mini herb only garden? Great for your cooking and herbs are usually quite easy to grow.
@livinguktaiwan nice work

Oh my word, those strawberries are gorgeous!
Your raised beds are beautiful, such a quaint neat garden you have!
I don't have any experience growing garlic, always thought they take forever before they can be harvested.
Those awful slugs and snails are such a problem. They're not only damaging my plants, but also making a mess on one of my walls. Snailbait helps for a while only, and I don't like putting pesticides where edible plants grow. There are natural pesticides that are not harmful, I remember Arthur ordered some online and it's sitting untouched in my laundry cupboard. I must get it out and use it.
I have strawberry plants in a raised bed, but I think we need to dig them up, add more fertile soil, and replant them, Another problem is the monkeys, so I will have to think of a miniature greenhouse to plant a few vegetables as well. The monkeys even dig up some of my spring onions, take one bite, and throw them away. My herbs are the only plants they leave alone.
Enjoy your garden Pauline, fresh always tastes so much better!
